This Class 4A substate clash featured two rising stars on the recruiting scene being pursued by multiple Missouri Valley Conference schools.
It took awhile for James Harrington and Jarrod Uthoff to make their presence felt last night. But once they got rolling, they put on a show for all in attendance last night, including Northern Iowa Coach Ben Jacobson and Creighton’s Dana Altman.
But Uthoff and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (18-4) got all the applause after a 47-42 comeback win over Cedar Falls that sent the J-Hawks to their first state tournament since …

It’s the best of both worlds for Kevin Jackson at this week’s state wrestling tournament.
The Iowa State coach gets to watch his son, Cole, compete at 215 pounds and also keep a close eye on wrestlers he either has in the fold or would like to see as Cyclones.
“We are taking visuals of all the kids we have coming in and we have some younger kids that we want to get our hands on,” Jackson said. “You never know where you’ll find a diamond in the rough. We are keeping …

Austin Blythe may be the defending champion at 285 pounds and a two-time state tournament finalist, but he went into a Class 2A quarterfinal match with Davenport Assumption’s Tyler Swope as an underdog.
And he knew it.
Swope had beaten the Williamsburg junior twice this season and had a chance to do it again Thursday with the match knotted 2-2 late in the third period. This time, Blythe (50-3) made a big move in the final seconds for a 6-2 win. He celebrated wildly in front of a packed house at Wells …

Tait Simpson had a bit of an attitude this week. Brashness, confidence, whatever it was, it served him well.
Simpson upset second-ranked Jared Hefler of Ogden, 7-5, and helped Lisbon climb to third in the Class 1A team race after the first day of the state wrestling tournament Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena. The Lions have 14 points and trail second-place Eddyville-Blakesburg by 4 1/2. Don Bosco leads with 26 and eight quarterfinalists.
Simpson, one of four Lions to advance, wasn’t shying away from the challenge and attacked from the opening whistle.
“I …

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s board a directors has approved the charging of spectators at the state cross country meet, an event that has historically been free.
If the IHSAA approves it as well, it will mean a $10-per-vehicle fee at Fort Dodge’s Kennedy Park.

IOWA CITY – Grace Murray and Beth Eyanson formed a friendship in swimming, but it’s expanded beyond a common interest in the sport.
The Iowa City standouts are better friends than competitors, but their competitiveness will be on display Saturday during the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Swim meet at the Horne Henry Center of the Marshalltown YMCA.
The state meet begins with the diving tonight at 5. Swim events are set for noon Saturday.
Eyanson and Murray have been two of the top performers in the area since they were …

There was an air of excitement on the Oriole side of the gym….the fans sensed a win before the game had even begun.  Maybe it was the sight of all the girls smiling…maybe it was the baked potato team dinner the night before…maybe it was just good old fashioned team spirit. Whatever it was, you could feel it when you walked in.
The night belonged to the Orioles from the beginning, when the National Anthem singer was a no show, and Oriole players/singers Hope Matus & Sydney Vaughn stepped out of the team …

IOWA CITY — Ryan Maske is a team player but he’s out for himself this weekend.
The Iowa City High junior was the lone prep golfer to qualify individually for the Class 4A state golf meet at Davenport Country Club. The first round opens today at noon with the second round Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
“It’s a great opportunity to get back there and try to compete again for a state title,” Maske said. “It means a lot because all my family and everybody has been supporting me. It feels good …
