The Iowa Hawkeyes have just barely put the finishing touches on their 2010 recruiting class, but they’re already hard at work on the 2011 class. Ah, the never-ending recruiting cycle of college football.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior Christian French said Tuesday night that Iowa officially offered him a football scholarship last weekend. It’s the second offer for French, joining one from the Iowa State Cyclones.
“Yeah, it’s exciting,” French said.
Iowa assistant coaches Reese Morgan and Erik Campbell were at Kennedy’s basketball game against Cedar Rapids Jefferson last Friday night. The 6-foot-6 French …

CEDAR FALLS — Solon’s Wes Sleeper will be able to get some much deserved R & R.
The Spartans quarterback battled through, not one but two, ACL injuries to help top-ranked Solon capture a third straight state title and extend its winning streak to 41 straight games.
Solon (14-0) scored 28 unanswered points to beat third-ranked Boyden Hull/Rock Valley, 38-7, in the Class 2A state football championship Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
Sleeper, who suffered a torn ACL earlier in the year and a second before the state semifinal against No. 2 North Fayette, …

CEDAR FALLS — It’s been a memorable year even if the ending was forgettable.
South Winn’s bid for its first state title ended with a 35-0 loss to No. 2 Council Bluffs St. Albert in the Class 1A state championship game Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
“We played hard. We had fun,” South Winn senior Jordan Andera said. “It’s disappointing it has to end this way, but that’s football. Someone has to win. Someone has to lose. I think we met up with a better team and that’s part of the game.”
The high-powered …

WEST UNION — They’ve whipped all 12 of their opponents, including two who are in Class 3A. One of those two (New Hampton) is in the 3A state playoff semifinals.
They’ve piled up 5,500 yards of total offense, 4,800 on the ground while averaging 45 points a game. They’re “closest” victory was 13 points.
They have a tradition, with six playoff semifinal appearances and a championship in 1992.
So why aren’t many people giving the North Fayette Hawks the proverbial snowball’s chance in their Class 2A semifinal Monday morning at the UNI-Dome? It’s their …

CEDAR FALLS — It promised to be a highly-competitive football game, but it played out differently than expected.
South Winneshiek and West Branch fielded two powerful offenses, but defense stole the show.
The Warriors’ defensive effort was slightly better, powering the ninth-ranked Warriors into their first ever state championship game after beating No. 3 West Branch, 14-7, in a Class 1A state semifinal Saturday at the UNI-Dome.
The Warriors advance to face No. 2 Council Bluffs St. Albert (13-0), which trounced No. 4 Prairie Valley, 49-21. The 1A championship game is Saturday, Nov. …

CEDAR FALLS — It’s the championship matchup everyone wanted. Well, sort of.
The bottom line is you’ll have two unbeaten teams in next week’s Class 4A title game. Iowa City High held up its end of the bargain in the eastern part of the state, scoring a touchdown in each of the first three quarters to beat Cedar Rapids Xavier, 21-3, in Friday’s second playoff semifinal at the UNI-Dome.
The Little Hawks (13-0) are in the finals for the sixth time, drawing championship game rookie Marshalltown (13-0) next weekend here. The Bobcats …

CEDAR FALLS — Mason City Newman did something uncharacteristic Friday morning that made North Tama do something even more uncharacteristic.
A football team that ordinarily does nothing but run, Newman got 190 yards passing and three touchdowns from quarterback Josh Luecht and upset the top-ranked Redhawks, 28-26, in a fine Class A playoff semifinal at the UNI-Dome.
The 28 points were 10 more than North Tama (12-1) allowed in its previous 12 games combined. It was hard to determine if that was more surprising or the way Newman (12-1) got those points …

IOWA CITY — Lord, Dan Sabers was born a gamblin’ man. The Iowa City High football coach pulled out the old fake punt despite being on his own 28-yard line in the first half last night.
Roll them dice, baby.
“I love fake punts,” Sabers said after his Little Hawks held off Cedar Rapids Washington, 35-14, in a Class 4A playoff quarterfinal at Bates Field. “Come on, I’ve got A.J. Derby back there. I mean, is it all that risky when you’ve got a man like that back there?”
Good point. Quarterback/punter Derby …
