Iowa City West Nick Moore sat down to the table and didn’t say much other than asking for a pen. He then began the ceremony of signing a National Letter of Intent to wrestle next year at the University of Iowa and coach Tom Brands.
Moore, ranked second in the nation at 160 pounds by InterMat, will attempt to become just the 19th 4-time state champion. He has been one of the top preps since he stepped foot in the Trojans wrestling room. He has amassed a 131-1 career mark, winning …

IOWA CITY — Solon made a big statement last night.
The distance between the top-ranked and third-ranked teams in Class 3A is further than the drive it takes to reach each other.
Top-ranked Solon handled No. 3 Iowa City Regina, 42-7, in a Class 2A District 5 battle last night at Regina High School.
Solon seemed to have a little more adrenaline pumping and wanted to put its stamp on a game that determined the district champion and increased the Spartans win streak to 35 games.
“To a certain extent,” Solon Coach Kevin Miller …

TULSA, Okla. — Former University of Iowa two-time All-American wrestler and Tama native Paul Bradley won by unanimous decision at the Strikeforce Challengers Series event Saturday.
Bradley, 26, improved to 12-1, winning all three rounds against Levi Avera at 170 pounds. Bradley was a three-time state finalist and a 2001 Class 2A 171-pound state champ for South Tama High School.
Lisbon native and two-time state wrestling champ (1991-92) Zach Light also competed. Light, one of the top wrestling trainers in the sport, lost by armbar submission to undefeated Tyron Woodley (6-0) in the …

This year really counts for Matt McDonough.
The University of Iowa red-shirt freshman is ready to contribute to the Hawkeye wrestling success as official preseason practices start today.
McDonough is trading his red-shirt for that traditional black-and-gold singlet. He used his first year to get acclimated to the college level.
“Now I get a chance to go out and prove it to everyone and I don’t have to wrestle in opens,” McDonough said. “Things are for real now and you’re really going for a national title. You’re not just training only to get …

I’ve been around wrestling for as long as I can remember. Like many in the sport, I followed my older brother around to meets and then started wrestling myself. I’ve managed to stay involved for at least 25 years in one form or another. Loved watching IPTV meets and the IHSAA tournaments, listening to the voices of Doug Brown and Tim Johnson.
I love boxing. Something about the “Sweet Science.” Watching fights on TV was a regular occurrence. I still remember where I was when I heard Mike Tyson knocked out …

Danny Song will assume his new role Sept. 1, and he couldn’t be happier. Song will take over as the strength and conditioning coach for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling team, replacing Jared Frayer, who left after one season to become an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin.
Song may be a surprise to some. He was an All-American for the Merchant Marine Academy, which competes in NCAA Division III, placing eighth in 2006. Iowa coach Tom Brands likes Song and expects him to make the biggest impact on the …

IOWA CITY - Nick Moore’s college decision may have been expected, but it should still bring excitement to University of Iowa wrestling fans.
Moore, a senior at Iowa City West, orally committed last night to wrestle for Hawkeye Coach Tom Brands.
“I really wanted to be a Hawkeye,” Moore said. “Going in I just kept an open mind about everything just in case everything didn’t go according to plan (but) that really wasn’t the case.”
Everything played out like many assumed. Moore is following his older brother, Nate, and former West teammates Grant Gambrall, …

Derek St. John is one of the more soft-spoken and unassuming wrestlers I have interviewed. He isn’t boisterous or obnoxious and his demeanor on the mat isn’t as emotional as some others.
There’s no denying how talented he has been, and this spring and summer has proven it even more. His latest conquest was in Fargo, N.D., last weekend, winning the 160-pound title of Junior Freestyle Nationals. The win was an important one to the soon-to-be University of Iowa Hawkeye and he was stellar in a 1-0, 3-2, victory over Oklahoma’s …

Former University of Iowa national champion Mark Perry has found a home to continue his budding coaching career. The former two-national champion and four-time All-American for the Hawkeyes was named the head assistant coach for head coach John Azevedo at Cal Poly-SLO.
It appears Perry will be replacing Sammie Henson, who was previously listed on the school’s website as the head assistant for the 2008-09 season. Perry served as an assistant for Troy Sunderland at Penn State University last season, and left the program when Sunderland resigned and former Iowa State head …
