A pair of local tennis programs will host a Breast Cancer Awareness Day during their meet on April 17th. According to Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ tennis coach Erin Seely, teams from Xavier and Cedar Rapids Jefferson will be wearing pink for the event.
Both schools will be holding various fundraisers in connection with the event.
The meet between the J-Hawks and the Saints is set for 9 a.m. at Xavier.

IOWA CITY — A heartbreaking — and potentially record-setting — loss in the semifinal round of the Class 2A team tennis tournament couldn’t keep Cedar Rapids Kennedy down.

After all, the team worked too hard to leave empty-handed.

The Kennedy girls responded from a loss to Bettendorf by quickly knocking off West Des Moines Valley in the consolation round Saturday, earning third place at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.

IOWA CITY — After spending three hours and five minutes outlasting a familiar foe in the semifinals, Cassandra Chalhoub didn’t have enough left in the tank to upend the tournament’s top seed.

The Cedar Rapids Xavier senior lost to Marshalltown’s Krissy Lankelma, 6-3, 6-0, in the Class 2A singles final of the state tennis tournament Friday at Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.

Chalhoub (13-3), the third seed, pushed Lankelma (24-0) for nearly every point, providing the first challenge of the tourney for the champion.

JOHNSTON — Lindsay Cayton and Hannah Mart of Marion finished fourth Friday in Class 1A doubles at the state tennis tournament in Johnston.
 
Cayton and Mart lost to a Red Oak duo in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2, then lost the third-place match to two-time defending state champions Michelle Schupbach and Lauren Friedman of Waterloo Columbus, 6-0, 6-2.
