CEDAR RAPIDS — This is the time prep tennis coaches are put to the test.
With rosters due Monday for Thursday’s Class 1A and 2A district meets, boys’ tennis coaches are challenged to find their best possible lineup.
It turns out that determining lineups for district competition is more complex than filling out a sheet with names. Coaches implore strategy to try to advance as many athletes to the state meet as well as improving the team’s chances to reach team substate.
Coaches and players have to decide whether to compete in singles …

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ golf team hit the ground running this season and they haven’t looked back.
The Saints continued the success they had at the end of the 2009 regular season and have experienced some unprecedented success.
The season opened with some big expectations, and the Saints delivered.
“At the beginning of the year we knew we had a lot of potential,” Xavier junior Kim Askelson said. “It played out well.”
Xavier has been nearly perfect this season, posting a 34-1 mark before Monday’s MVC Mississippi Division meet. The …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Moms know.
It was Jon Keller’s freshman year at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School, and his mother, Joni, had a feeling there was something physically wrong with him.
“I think it was November, a week before basketball practice started,” said Al Keller, Jon’s father. “My wife noticed some things going on. Jon was urinating a lot, drinking a lot. She just thought something wasn’t right.”
Joni Keller hopped online and did some research on her son’s symptoms. She narrowed her diagnosis to two things: leukemia or diabetes.
Doctors were seen and …

DES MOINES — Forty-eight years, girls’ track has been a sanctioned sport in Iowa. Forty-eight years, the girls’ 400-meter relay has been contested at the Drake Relays.
All those years. And nobody has run it as fast as these four Women of Troy ran it Saturday afternoon.
Iowa City West set an all-time Iowa best of 48.10 seconds in blazing to the Drake title.
“It felt fast,” said anchor Jessica Gehrke.
It was the fastest ever. West’s effort eclipsed Waukee’s time of 49.15, set last year.
Fast. But, according to the Women of Troy, they …

IOWA CITY — Bob Askelson walked around Pleasant Valley Golf Course for four hours Wednesday morning. He didn’t hit one ball and wasn’t out to get extra exercise or anything.
He was there to watch and support his daughter, Kimmy.
“I come to as many (meets) as I can,” Askelson said. “Yeah, it was a good choice to come today.”
A real good choice.
Kimmy Askelson did her dad proud with a two-over-par 74 that earned her medalist honors at the nine-school CRANDIC tournament. The Cedar Rapids Xavier junior flirted with even-par until finding …

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ team traded their traditional school colors for something a little more meaningful Saturday.
The J-Hawks and Saints took the court for their tennis match, wearing pink shirts, in an attempt to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The event, called “Volleying for Breast Cancer” featured the pink uniform tops, flowers given to players’ mothers and a donation to a local charity that holds a special place in Jefferson Coach Pam Towe’s heart.
Towe was diagnosed with breast cancer in …

DES MOINES — The abundance of private schools at this week’s boys’ state basketball tournament once again has some people questioning if the Iowa High School Athletic Association should look into an enrollment “multiplier” to determine sports classifications for non-public schools.
States such as Missouri and Arkansas use a multiplier system, while other states have separate athletics classes for public and private schools. As an example, the enrollment of Council Bluffs St. Albert (which was in the Class 1A field) would jump from 152 to 228 using a multiplier of 1.5.
There …
