CEDAR RAPIDS — All the banging and crashing done against them. All the size they had to confront inside.
And the thing that doomed the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks in their Class 4A state tournament quarterfinal was the 3-point shot. Go figure.
It was a trio of treys that were pivotal as Sioux City East rallied in the fourth quarter to end Jefferson’s season, 51-43, Wednesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
“We tried to stop their inside game the whole game,” said Jeff’s Jarrod Uthoff. “Then they hit those outside shots.”

CEDAR RAPIDS — You get this from Marcus Paige.
“He’s something else.”
 And this from Josh Oglesby.
“He’s really good. That’s about all you can say.”
There’s been more said about Harrison Barnes. A lot more.
The Ames superstar is considered the top college recruit in the country and perhaps the best prep boys’ basketball player in Iowa history. The consensus is he could have jumped straight to the NBA next year but decided to play at least one season at North Carolina.
Linn-Mar’s Paige and Cedar Rapids Washington’s Oglesby have played with or against the …

MARION — At least Chris Robertson has a good sense of humor about his best player’s malady.
“I almost answered the phone with ‘Still day to day,’” the Linn-Mar boys’ basketball coach laughed Monday afternoon.
Yes, point guard Marcus Paige is “still day to day” and may or may not play tonight when second-ranked Linn-Mar (21-1) and Pleasant Valley (17-7) get together in their Class 4A substate final at the U.S. Cellular Center. Tipoff is approximately 8 p.m., following the Cedar Rapids Washington-Iowa City High substate final, which tips at 6:30.

MARION — The Linn-Mar Lions are borrowing the old National Football League line in this case. Point guard Marcus Paige is officially being called a game-time decision.
The super sophomore was diagnosed with mononucleosis last week and sat out his team’s final regular-season game. No. 2 Linn-Mar begins Class 4A substate play tonight at home against Dubuque Senior, and it’s unknown if he’ll be able to go.
“He’s doing a little bit more every day,” said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson. “It literally is day to day with him. He’s been medically cleared …

The big Solon-North Cedar Class 2A district final boys’ basketball game Tuesday night has been moved from Tiffin to Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Clear Creek-Amana had its Class 3A district game Monday night against Fairfield postponed because of Sunday’s snows, with the game re-scheduled for Tuesday.
Hence, the need to move Solon-North Cedar. Solon is ranked fourth in 2A and North Cedar 10th.
