This Class 4A substate clash featured two rising stars on the recruiting scene being pursued by multiple Missouri Valley Conference schools.
It took awhile for James Harrington and Jarrod Uthoff to make their presence felt last night. But once they got rolling, they put on a show for all in attendance last night, including Northern Iowa Coach Ben Jacobson and Creighton’s Dana Altman.
But Uthoff and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (18-4) got all the applause after a 47-42 comeback win over Cedar Falls that sent the J-Hawks to their first state tournament since …

Since there are a smaller number of 3A regionals I will tackle predictions from tonight’s duals. I hate predictions, especially in wrestling, because so many variables effect the outcome. I’ll list the match ups and pick a winner without a score. Winners advance to the State Duals this Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. Here we go….

IOWA CITY — Rebounds are more associated with a different winter sport, but the Iowa City West wrestling team is looking for one.
The Trojans placed a surprising fourth at the traditional state tournament last weekend after having hopes of a championship performance.
West will take its first step of a bounce back in a class 3A regional dual meet tonight against Keokuk at West High School. Competition begins at 7 p.m. Regional dual winners advance to the 3A State Duals tournament Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

East Buchanan is attempting to claim its first state duals berth, but if the Bucs are going to end their season in Cedar Rapids they will have to earn it.
The third-ranked Bucs host a competitive Class 1A regional dual at Winthrop, featuring No. 9 Lisbon, Alburnett and West Branch. East Buchanan opens with West Branch, while Lisbon takes on Alburnett in the semifinals, starting at 6 p.m.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Kennedy played the role of party crasher last night.
The Cougars tried to restrict the celebration to the pageantry before the meet on the evening when Cedar Rapids Jefferson honored each of the storied program’s state finalists and former coaches.
Kennedy won eight matches, claiming a 41-24 victory over Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual at Jefferson High School.
“What a great opportunity to wrestle in front of not only Jefferson legends but Cedar Rapids area legends,” Kennedy Coach Brent Paulson said, referring to the attendance of …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Wrestling teams competing in duals resemble chains. They’re only as strong as their weakest link.
Waverly-Shell Rock has six elite wrestlers, favored to win almost every time out, but the rest of the lineup exhibited the Go-Hawks’ sturdiness.
Class 3A second-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock went 3-0, including a 40-24 win over No. 10 Cedar Rapids Prairie, to win the Holiday Wrestling Classic dual tournament Saturday at Prairie.
“I thought we were more consistent today than we have been,” Waverly-Shell Rock Coach Rick Caldwell said. “Those kids who aren’t the returning state …

High schools across Iowa opened its wrestling rooms for their first official day of practices. State champions start the varsity season, starting to pave their way to the top of the podium once again. Others are looking to make that leap to prominence and newcomers are becoming acclimated to the high school ranks. I visited three practice rooms to bring you the sights and sounds of the prep season’s start.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson Coach Dick Briggs addresses his team, letting them know what to expect and that wrestling isn’t the sport for …

Cedar Rapids Washington opened wrestling practice along with prep programs all across the state. The season has officially begun and a sense of optimism should be emanating from the Warriors. After a few medalists and state finalists the last few years, Washington crowned its first state champion in more than 20 years. Former Warrior heavyweight Brandon Burrell captured the Class 3A state crown in February, the first since Jamie Byrne won in 1988.
It hasn’t resulted in higher numbers, but for the wrestlers dedicated to the program, it’s provided clarity to …
