CEDAR RAPIDS — If in retirement style, Erik Boyer placed his soccer shoes at midfield and walked off the soccer pitch for the rest of the season, you couldn’t blame him.
Going into last night’s match with Waterloo East, the Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior striker had played seven games. He had seven goals and seven assists.
Seven, seven, seven.
“Those are lucky numbers,” Boyer said.
Of course, there’s not much luck involved in Boyer’s game. He’s been an integral part of Kennedy’s second-ranked, undefeated squad.
A second-team all-stater last season, he has played at a …

IOWA CITY — Had Iowa City West not won last season’s Class 3A state championship game …
Well, no worries there. The Trojans did beat Ames, 3-2.
It righted wrongs from the previous two seasons when West lost the title game. No need to go see that therapist after all, right head coach Brad Stiles?
“That’s for sure,” Stiles said. “I was joking around that you would have had to keep an eye on me had we lost three in a row. Winning that game was definitely a good thing.”
Speaking of good things, …

URBANDALE — For the first time in four years, the Iowa City West boys’ soccer team can call itself the state’s best.

The Trojans rallied from a one-goal deficit, took a two-goal lead and then held on in a furious finish to beat Ames, 3-2, last night in the Class 3A state championship game.

In a game filled with drama, violence and controversy, West earned a state record-tying fourth soccer title in seven title appearances. It also erased some of the pain of two consecutive losses in the final.

“I honestly had a …

URBANDALE — Marcus Kloos draped himself with a state championship flag disguised as a cape. He hobbled to the Iowa City Regina cheering section on crutches and shuffled back to the sideline with emotions wearing heavy.

Kloos did not play in Regina’s 1-0 win against Council Bluffs St. Albert to claim the Class 1A state boys’ soccer championship Saturday. Kloos, the team’s defensive leader at sweeper, suffered a broken fibula before the district tournament. But he was the first player to touch the school’s first state championship soccer trophy minutes after …

PLEASANT HILL — When preparation meets focus and punctuality, the Iowa City West boys’ soccer team is three steps ahead of its competition.

The Trojans cruised to their third-straight state title game with a 5-0 win against Bettendorf last night in a Class 3A state semifinal. It was a domination rooted in the team’s preparation for its longtime Eastern Iowa rival.

“I had a good idea that the guys were going to be ready today,” Iowa City West coach Brad Stiles said. “We were all on time, everything was good. And I …
