VIDEO: Solon takes victory over DeWitt, 35-13

Solon’s era in Class 3A started the way last year’s ended, with a lopsided victory. The Spartans, three-time Class 2A champions, won their 42 game in a row at DeWitt.

WATCH: Prep football preview with Solon’s Kevin Miller, Xavier’s Duane Schulte

KJ Pilcher of Source Media Group talks to Solon football coach Kevin Miller and Xavier coach Duane Schulte for this season's first prep football Webcast. Solon beats Kuemper, 5-2

DES MOINES – This might have been the hardest Brandon Shulista threw anything all day. “I was pretty pumped up,” the Solon pitcher said after stabbing a bullet of a comebacker to end Saturday afternoon’s Class 2A state championship baseball game. ”That line drive really hurt my hand, actually. Just a huge adrenalin rush.” Shulista stood there temporarily stunned after the reflex catch gave his school its first state baseball title, 5-2, over Carroll Kuemper at Principal Park. ...

PHOTOS, VIDEO: Solon batters Cascade, earn top seed at state

SOLON — You look at their batting averages and immediately think conspiracy theory. They’ve got to be a product of that sometimes “unique” high school scoring. Then you watch the Solon Spartans hit and your mind changes. Maybe those gaudy numbers really are legit. It was line drive after line drive last night in a Class 2A substate final. And that was just the first inning. Solon scored 10 times in that frame and went on to a 15-8 win over Cascade. The ...

Golf postseason hits stride today

The Vikings, who placed fourth at state last season, travel to Charles City for a sectional with Clear Lake, Crestwood, Forest City, Hampton-Dumont, Iowa Falls-Alden and New Hampton. The top four individuals and top two ...

Solon boys, MV-L girls make the most of their shot

A mere appearance wasn’t enough. "We weren’t happy just qualifying (for the Drake Relays)," said Solon boys’ track coach Mark Sovers. "It was a great opportunity to be on that kind of stage. But the guys wanted to do something with that opportunity." They did. And so did their female counterparts to the north. The prep portion of the Relays is traditionally dominated by metropolitan schools. But the boys from Solon and the girls from Mount Vernon-Lisbon made an imprint. Runner-up finishes in the 1,600- ...

2010 boys’ hoops coach of year: Brad Randall

SOLON — There was a faction that wanted Brad Randall gone. The lifelong Solonite wasn’t winning enough basketball games. “To be quite honest, about seven years ago there was a group of parents that wanted me out,” Randall said last week. But the coach received the support of Solon’s administration and kept his job. You don’t hear much complaining now. Solon has made the state tournament four of the last five years, including a Class 2A state championship in 2009. Despite a completely ...

Western Christian too much for Solon

DES MOINES — Ladies and gentlemen, here’s your overwhelming favorite for the Class 2A state basketball championship in 2011. If it’s fair to look a year ahead. The Western Christian Wolfpack pocketed their sixth title last night, preventing Solon from a 2A repeat with a 58-45 victory at Wells Fargo Arena. The almost overwhelming thing about this WC team is that there was one senior of any significance. Of course, point guard Bryce Groeneweg was the all-tournament captain, so he’ll be missed. But ...
