Junior Colton Storla ran for 196 yards and three touchdowns and Marion buried Mount Vernon under a third-quarter scoring avalanche, 42-3, last night in a non-district high school football game at Thomas Park. Golf postseason hits stride today

Prep golfers hit the course for Iowa High School Athletic Association championship meets today as 35 sectional meets in all three classes across the state. Decorah senior Andrew Peter will look to defend his individual state title, and help lead the Vikings back to the Class 3A state meet. Xavier’s Askelson does dad proud

IOWA CITY — Bob Askelson walked around Pleasant Valley Golf Course for four hours Wednesday morning. He didn’t hit one ball and wasn’t out to get extra exercise or anything. Fish, Forkner to sign NLIs at Marion

Marion's Brittany Fish and JoAnna Forkner will sign national letters of intent Wednesday. Forkner will play volleyball at Kirkwood Community College; Fish will play basketball at Maryville University (St. Louis). The signings will be at 3 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Forkner was a part of Marion's state-championship team in 2008. Fish helped lead the Indians to two state-tournament appearances in basketball.

IGHSAU Class 3A district and regional golf assignments

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released the Class 3A district and regional golf assignments for the 2010 season. Marion heads to Stone Creek Golf Course for a district hosted by Williamsburg and could join the regional qualifiers from the Manchester district at Springbrook Country Club in DeWitt.

IBCA honors Stokes, Paige

Kiah Stokes of Linn-Mar and Morgan Paige of Marion have been selected the Class 3A and Class 4A girls' basketball players of the year by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association. Stokes, a junior, led Linn-Mar to an undefeated season and the 4A championship. Paige, a senior who has signed with the University of Wisconsin, helped Marion reach the state tournament and claim the Wamac Conference West Division title. Mika Rodewald of Manson-Northwest Webster was the 2A winner, Hallie Christofferson of Exira won the 1A award.

O’Donnell takes the reins at Marion

MARION -- Brian O'Donnell has done the rebuilding thing before. So this ought to seem mild. O'Donnell, who led the Springville High School girls' basketball program from obscurity to two trips to the state finals, has been hired as the coach at Marion. Corby Laube, athletics director at Marion High School, hopes to have a girls' basketball coach in place soon. "We're in the middle of the process," Laube said Tuesday. "I hope in the next couple weeks, we'll know more." Sherryl Gaffney-Paige stepped down after Marion's appearance at the state tournament.
