Go-Hawks win another tight battle with West

CEDAR RAPIDS — It was the type of ending wrestling fans have come to expect whenever Iowa City West and Waverly-Shell Rock dual. The two Class 3A powers have made it a regular occurrence to fight to the bitter end against each other, and the latest installment followed suit. Waverly-Shell Rock notched the last of six lead changes and won the final bout, capturing their third straight duals crown with a 34-30 victory over top-ranked West in the Class 3A championship of ...

West wallops Keokuk, earns top seed at state

IOWA CITY — Iowa City West took care of business and the Trojans didn’t need to punch in for very long to handle it. The top-ranked Trojans made quick work of Keokuk, crushing the Chiefs 57-18 in a Class 3A regional dual last night at West that lasted just 52 minutes. It was the third win over Keokuk this season, and punched the Trojans’ ticket to the State Dual tournament Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. The Trojans did their ...

Class 3A Regional Duals

Since there are a smaller number of 3A regionals I will tackle predictions from tonight's duals. I hate predictions, especially in wrestling, because so many variables effect the outcome. I'll list the match ups and pick a winner without a score. Winners advance to the State Duals this Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. Here we go.... AT BETTENDORF Bettendorf vs. Maquoketa - Bettendorf. AT INDIANOLA Indianola vs. Ankeny- Indianola AT IOWA CITY WEST Iowa City West vs. Keokuk - Iowa City West AT ...

Kennedy shoots for trifecta against rival Washington

Cedar Rapids Kennedy ended an 11-game losing streak to Cedar Rapids Washington this season, sweeping the Warriors in regular-season play. But to accurately say they’re cured of the Warriors’ hex, the Cougars must win one more time. Fifth-ranked Kennedy (19-2) faces No. 9 Cedar Rapids Washington (15-8) in a Class 4A regional final girls’ basketball showdown Tuesday. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Cedar Rapids Prairie. "I hope we can jump out, get a lead early and play loose," said Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff. The Kennedy-Washington ...

A Westside Story

DES MOINES — Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Josh Lambrecht and Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Conner Herman have traveled similar paths, and that’s just not the road from Southwest Cedar Rapids to downtown Des Moines. Herman and Lambrecht suffered disappointing district losses last year that postponed their state tournament debuts. Both used them as motivation and find themselves at the same destination. Lambrecht and Herman each earned quarterfinal wins last night in the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A state wrestling tournament at Wells ...

Moore success

DES MOINES — Nick Moore was approached by former Iowa City West teammate Dylan Carew in a tunnel exiting the Wells Fargo Arena floor. Though neither recalls the exact words spoken during last year's state tournament finals, Carew offered motivational words concerning Moore’s future, reminding the Trojans standout he would soon be experiencing what Don Bosco’s Bart Reiter did when he completed his quest to be the Iowa’s latest four-time state champion. Now, top-ranked Moore attempts to become just the 19th four-time state ...
