There are the divisions for the MVC in 2010-11 and 2011-12: MISSISSIPPI DIVISION Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cedar Rapids Washington Dubuque Senior Dubuque Wahlert Iowa City High Linn-Mar Waterloo West VALLEY DIVISION Cedar Falls Cedar Rapids Jefferson Cedar Rapids Prairie Cedar Rapids Xavier Dubuque Hempstead Iowa City West Waterloo East
Here it is. Chris Robertson of Linn-Mar and Bob Fontana of Cedar Rapids Kennedy are the division coaches of the year. Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Jarrod Uthoff and TrayVonn Wright of Waterloo West were players of the year. Striking how much better the Valley Division was this season than the Mississippi Division. Three MVC are at the state tournament next week, all from the Valley Division.
To heck with the Mississippi Valley Conference. Forgive the Marion Indians if they choose a word that’s stronger then “heck” in this case. They lost four basketball games this season, and three of them were to MVC teams. That includes Dubuque Wahlert, which pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 59-50 win in a Class 3A district final last night at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. “I knew it was going to be a battle coming in,” said Wahlert sophomore guard Jake May, brother ...

DYERSVILLE — The celebratory meals and the congratulatory pats on the back will have to wait, because the Denver-Tripoli wrestling team wasn’t wasting any time to get back to work. The Titans had practice scheduled just hours after they powered their way to a team title in what was considered one of the tougher sectional fields. Denver prevailed in fine fashion, advancing 10 to next week’s district meet and winning the Class 2A sectional wrestling tournament at Beckman High School. The Titans ...
DUBUQUE — Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland said it was one of those days. A satisfactory effort, but nothing spectacular from his Trojans. Other Mississippi Valley Conference teams may beg to differ and would likely exchange outcomes any day. West crowned five champions, tallying 244½ points, to win its seventh straight MVC tournament title Saturday at Dubuque Senior. The Trojans finished a massive 89 points ahead of runner-up Linn-Mar. The approach is the same every year, according to West senior Nick Moore. “It’s ...

It's no surprise that the top three include Waverly-Shell Rock, Iowa City West and Bettendorf. West and Waverly are flipped based on West's victory over the Go-Hawks at the Five Seasons Duals in December. It will be interesting how the next month plays out setting up their stretch runs to the state tournament. Waverly has four No. 1 wrestlers, while West has one, but three others in the top three of their respective weights. BUT, guess you has the second-most top-ranked ...
CEDAR RAPIDS — Scot Moenck chose Waukon and MFL MarMac as a Rivalry Saturday matchup simply because ... well, because both teams are darn good. He may have stumbled onto a historical moment. Waukon Coach Gene Klinge goes after his 939th career victory in the 4:30 game at the U.S. Cellular Center. That would give him sole possession of the all-time record among Iowa girls’ basketball coaches. Currently, he shares the mark with the late Bob Mullen. “I didn’t expect Coach Klinge to have ...
