Cedar Falls dumps Hempstead, 24-7

Pat Mitchell has watched opening nights where the entire football game seemed one tug away from unraveling. Friday night, Cedar Falls pushed a lot of the right buttons. Lineups key to district play

CEDAR RAPIDS — This is the time prep tennis coaches are put to the test. With rosters due Monday for Thursday’s Class 1A and 2A district meets, boys’ tennis coaches are challenged to find their best possible lineup. It turns out that determining lineups for district competition is more complex than filling out a sheet with names. Class 2A boys tennis district assignments

The Class 2A district assignments were released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. They begin May 13. The top two in each districts, in both singles and doubles, advance to the state meets May 28 and 29 in Waterloo (Class 1A) and Cedar Rapids' Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex (2A). Cedar Rapids Jefferson hosts a district with Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Marshalltown. All-Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ hoops team

Here it is. Chris Robertson of Linn-Mar and Bob Fontana of Cedar Rapids Kennedy are the division coaches of the year. Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Jarrod Uthoff and TrayVonn Wright of Waterloo West were players of the year. Striking how much better the Valley Division was this season than the Mississippi Division. Three MVC are at the state tournament next week, all from the Valley Division.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Josh Oglesby Junior CR Washington Josh had a great week scoring 43 points in a pair of Warrior wins including seven three-pointers as part of a 25-point effort in the win over Jefferson. The junior perimeter player is now tied for 3rd in the MVC in scoring at 16.7 ppg. He also averages 5.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. West wins seventh straight MVC crown

DUBUQUE — Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland said it was one of those days. A satisfactory effort, but nothing spectacular from his Trojans. Other Mississippi Valley Conference teams may beg to differ and would likely exchange outcomes any day. West crowned five champions, tallying 244½ points, to win its seventh straight MVC tournament title Saturday at Dubuque Senior. The Trojans finished a massive 89 points ahead of runner-up Linn-Mar.
