Clear Creek-Amana holds off Mount Pleasant

There was certainly a case of contrasts at Bob Evans Field Friday night. The Clear Creek-Amana High School football team appeared to be in midseason form, while fifth-ranked Mount Pleasant left with more questions than answers. Clippers' quarterback Dillon Villhauer threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns in his first varsity start, and the defense limited the Panthers to just 32 yards rushing in a 28-20 season opening win. PHOTOS: Defending-champ Clippers handle Harlan, 7-2

FORT DODGE — For all the wins and all the titles of the Jim White Era at Clear Creek Amana, one minor item of dominance is missing. Back-to-back state championships. Second-ranked CCA took a firm step toward that achievement Tuesday, banging out 13 hits in a 7-2 victory over No. 15 Harlan in a Class 3A state softball quarterfinal at the Rogers Sports Complex. “I’m not even thinking about (repeating),” said White, who has won five state titles. “I’m just worried about surviving ...

Clippers open tough 3A tourney run

Clear Creek Amana hits — and runs — with frequency. The Clippers (33-5) are hitting a fat .405 and averaging about nine runs per game as they begin defense of their Class 3A state softball championship today. No. 2 CCA opens at home against South Tama, and — as is usually the case — gets its entire regional path at Oxford. “I do like our offense,” CCA Coach Jim White said. “I think the move (of the pitcher’s rubber) to 43 feet ...

Clippers sailing along

DES MOINES — Clear Creek-Amana’s state tournament drought is history, and all three of their wrestlers are still drinking from the fountain. The Clippers had three qualifiers for the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A state wrestling tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. They are Clear Creek Amana’s first state competitors since 1994. “It means so much to me,” Clippers 140-pounder Josh Rohret said. “We just have really been pushing ourselves this year. The coaches have been really helping us.” Rohret is ...

The Predicament’s January Class 2A rankings

The top six teams in the rankings have a number of wrestlers on the list. All of them have at least five wrestlers ranked. Defending state champion Ballard still leads the way with Denver-Tripoli and Davenport Assumption close behind. The state tournament could be very interesting depending upon the number of qualifiers each can take to Des Moines. Top 10 State Tournament Teams (# of ranked wrestlers) 1. Ballard (6) 2. Denver-Tripoli (8) 3. Davenport Assumption (7) 4. Independence (6) 5. Forest City (5) 6. East Marshall ...

Williamsburg running game, line play outdo CCA’s passing game

WILLIAMSBURG — It was a contrast of styles in high school football last night. Clear Creek Amana came in with a vaunted passing offense. Williamsburg fielded an offense based on strong line play and a running attack. The Raiders’ style prevailed, running all over Clear Creek Amana and stifling the Clippers offense in a 48-7 victory at Bob Murphy Stadium. The Raiders won their first district title since 2006. “We wanted to get up on them early, shut the door and put them away ...
