Clippers sailing along

DES MOINES — Clear Creek-Amana’s state tournament drought is history, and all three of their wrestlers are still drinking from the fountain. The Clippers had three qualifiers for the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A state wrestling tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. They are Clear Creek Amana’s first state competitors since 1994. “It means so much to me,” Clippers 140-pounder Josh Rohret said. “We just have really been pushing ourselves this year. The coaches have been really helping us.” Rohret is ...

The Predicament’s January Class 2A rankings

The top six teams in the rankings have a number of wrestlers on the list. All of them have at least five wrestlers ranked. Defending state champion Ballard still leads the way with Denver-Tripoli and Davenport Assumption close behind. Denver-Tripoli (8) 3. Davenport Assumption (7) 4. Independence (6) 5. Forest City (5) 6. East Marshall ...

Williamsburg running game, line play outdo CCA’s passing game

WILLIAMSBURG — It was a contrast of styles in high school football last night. Clear Creek Amana came in with a vaunted passing offense. Williamsburg fielded an offense based on strong line play and a running attack. The Raiders’ style prevailed, running all over Clear Creek Amana and stifling the Clippers offense in a 48-7 victory at Bob Murphy Stadium. VIDEO: Record-setting performance takes Clear Creek Amana QB by surprise

Blaze Smith didn’t exactly learn about his record performance in record time. He heard about it four days after the fact. From a reporter. Smith, the quarterback at Clear Creek Amana, established an all-time Iowa best with 43 completions in the Clippers’ 40-28 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg last Friday. “Really?” Smith said. “That’s kind of cool. I try to stay away from the stats and keep a level head.” Even for a level head, these are mind-bending numbers: 43 completions in 54 attempts for 430 ...

Coach downplays Clear Creek Amana’s impressive batting stats

Jim White isn’t a big fan of QuikStats Iowa. He isn’t wild about the public seeing his team’s statistics on the Internet. And he certainly isn’t crazy about his players viewing them. “I’m a team-first guy,” said White, head softball coach at Clear Creek Amana. “I’m just kind of concerned about kids being too concerned about their batting averages.” Here, in a nutshell, is what viewers will find: The Clippers can hit. A lot. Class 3A No. 1 CCA, which improved to 30-0 after ...
