Paige, Uthoff, Miller are INA 1st-team all-staters
The first order of business for Marcus Paige was obvious. “Rest for a little bit,” the Linn-Mar sophomore said Saturday after his team’s Class 4A state tournament consolation victory over Sioux City East. Paige contracted mononucleosis late in the regular season and missed the final game. He sat out Linn-Mar’s first substate game and played noticeably less than 100 percent the rest of the way. The 6-foot-1 lefty point guard was sure something when he was healthy. He averaged 14 points, shot better ...

Tuesday’s Class 4A substate final capsules
Cedar Rapids Washington (13-8) vs. Iowa City High (10-12) at U.S. Cellular Center, 6:30 p.m.: These teams played in Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center on Jan. 30, with City High winning, 77-63. Their seasons took opposite turns after that. Washington hasn't lost since, winning seven straight, including a 43-41 substate semifinal victory last Friday night against Cedar Rapids Kennedy. Josh Oglesby hit a long 3-pointer to win the game, and he leads the Warriors in scoring at 16.1 ...
Paige’s status still day to day
MARION — At least Chris Robertson has a good sense of humor about his best player’s malady. “I almost answered the phone with ‘Still day to day,’” the Linn-Mar boys’ basketball coach laughed Monday afternoon. Yes, point guard Marcus Paige is “still day to day” and may or may not play tonight when second-ranked Linn-Mar (21-1) and Pleasant Valley (17-7) get together in their Class 4A substate final at the U.S. Cellular Center. Tipoff is approximately 8 p.m., following the Cedar Rapids ...

Kennedy beats Class 4A #9 Cedar Falls, 49-46
Bob Fontana let out a slight chuckle when asked if he found his basketball team again Tuesday night. “I will say this,” the Cedar Rapids Kennedy coach said after his team upset Cedar Falls, 49-46. “I’m very proud of these kids the way they bounced back tonight.” As well he should be. The Cougars recovered from an ugly 27-25 loss last Friday night to Cedar Rapids Jefferson with a comeback victory against the ninth-ranked team in Class 4A. Kennedy (10-5) rallied from an ...

West wins seventh straight MVC crown
DUBUQUE — Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland said it was one of those days. A satisfactory effort, but nothing spectacular from his Trojans. Other Mississippi Valley Conference teams may beg to differ and would likely exchange outcomes any day. West crowned five champions, tallying 244½ points, to win its seventh straight MVC tournament title Saturday at Dubuque Senior. The Trojans finished a massive 89 points ahead of runner-up Linn-Mar. The approach is the same every year, according to West senior Nick Moore. “It’s ...
