The Waterloo West Wahawks promised to be a bigger and bulkier football squad this season.
Alas, all that might didn’t translate into a win on opening night. In fact, Dubuque Wahlert raced right past the host Wahawks, 42-19, Friday at Memorial Stadium.
“We’ve got a lot of speed,” noted Wahlert’s cat-quick tailback, Riley McCarron, whose 211 yards of total offense spurred the visitors.
“Even our line is quick,” McCarron added. “The line got off the ball and did a great job. … We came out with a lot of energy.”

WATERLOO – Charles City’s baseball team hit a number of stinging fly balls throughout Monday’s regular season finale with Waterloo West.
The Comets’ fly balls were often right in the vicinity of a WaHawks defender.
Waterloo West then capitalized on an untimely Charles City error as the WaHawks earned a 2-1 win at Lou Koenigsfeld Field.

WATERLOO – Jadyn Spencer carried her bat to home plate out of respect for ceremony in the first inning Monday.

WATERLOO – A short trip to Waterloo Columbus turned into a long ride home Tuesday night for the Waterloo West baseball team.
The metro rivals tangled on the Sailors’ field, and Columbus took full advantage of four Wahawk errors and a handful of missed opportunities to post a 9-8 non-conference victory.
“We gave up a lot tonight,” West coach Jeremy Langner said. “Our defense made too many errors, our pitching struggled, and we left too many opportunities to score on the bases. The worst thing that happened to us tonight is we …

It turns out that determining lineups for district competition is more complex than filling out a sheet with names. Coaches implore strategy to try to advance as many athletes to the state meet as well as improving the team’s chances to reach team substate.
Coaches and players have to decide whether to compete in singles …
