After a sluggish first half, Iowa City West came out strong in the second to defeat Waterloo East, 35-14, on a beautiful opening night for Mississippi Valley Conference football.
West opened the scoring late in the first quarter with quarterback Charles Rogers scampering in from seven yards out on a broken play. West continued the scoring in the second quarter as Rogers hit sophomore Ezra Reiners on a 20-yard pass completion for a touchdown.
With a 14-0 lead at halftime, West Coach Brian Sauser said he got on his team.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa – Waterloo East stranded 11 baserunners, eight in scoring position, as the Trojans were eliminated Saturday by Marshalltown, 3-1, in a Class 4A regional softball opener.
East (17-20) left the bases-loaded in the both the second and third innings, while the Bobcats (18-17) took advantage of two Trojan errors to score all three of their runs.
East tied the game in the top of the third when Jessica Kinnetz hit a one-out double and Charissa Wright drove her home.

WATERLOO – The Waterloo East Trojan baseball squad dropped a pair of contests to Cedar Rapids Jefferson Friday, losing 11-1 and 10-0.
Jefferson (19-14) scored seven of its 11 runs during the first three innings of game one and cruised.
“First game (we) had one of those innings where we fell apart,” said East coach Bruce Pietro.
“Defensively, the pitcher was throwing strikes. Gaige (Frank), every time he’s on the mound he throws strikes and we just didn’t play defense well.”

A pair of strong pitching performances propelled the Waterloo East softball squad to a sweep of Dubuque Wahlert Tuesday as the Trojans won, 4-1 and 8-0.
Alyson Netty and Kesley Rash both fired complete-game two-hitters for East.
Solid hitting was also East’s ally on this evening. In game one, Katelyn Kinnetz, Netty and Megan Dunn also registered two hits apiece.

CEDAR RAPIDS — This is the time prep tennis coaches are put to the test.
With rosters due Monday for Thursday’s Class 1A and 2A district meets, boys’ tennis coaches are challenged to find their best possible lineup.
It turns out that determining lineups for district competition is more complex than filling out a sheet with names. Coaches implore strategy to try to advance as many athletes to the state meet as well as improving the team’s chances to reach team substate.

The Class 2A district assignments were released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. They begin May 13. The top two in each districts, in both singles and doubles, advance to the state meets May 28 and 29 in Waterloo (Class 1A) and Cedar Rapids’ Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex (2A).

Striking how much better the Valley Division was this season than the Mississippi Division. Three MVC are at the state tournament next week, all from the Valley Division.
