The top six teams in the rankings have a number of wrestlers on the list. All of them have at least five wrestlers ranked. Defending state champion Ballard still leads the way with Denver-Tripoli and Davenport Assumption close behind. The state tournament could be very interesting depending upon the number of qualifiers each can take to Des Moines.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Scot Moenck chose Waukon and MFL MarMac as a Rivalry Saturday matchup simply because … well, because both teams are darn good.
He may have stumbled onto a historical moment.
Waukon Coach Gene Klinge goes after his 939th career victory in the 4:30 game at the U.S. Cellular Center.
That would give him sole possession of the all-time record among Iowa girls’ basketball coaches. Currently, he shares the mark with the late Bob Mullen.
“I didn’t expect Coach Klinge to have a chance to break it on our night,” said Moenck, …

ALBURNETT — Six baserunners were stranded in the first three innings. Glass half-empty.
On the other hand, they were getting runners aboard. Glass half-full.
“Honestly, I wasn’t that worried,” said Alburnett’s Allyssa Neighbor. “We usually end up scoring at the end of games. I had complete confidence. We’d done it before.”
And, lo and behold, when crunch time arrived, Alburnett’s cup runneth over.
The 14th-ranked Pirates struck for five late runs and sidelined Maquoketa Valley, 5-1, in a Class 2A first-round regional softball game Thursday night at Alburnett High School.

Spring swings have led to a dramatic summer transformation.
A softball program accustomed to wallowing in the depths of the Tri-Rivers Conference, Maquoketa Valley underwent a stirring flip-flop this summer.
Winners of only two league games a year ago, the Wildcats quadrupled their league scoring output and captured the Tri-Rivers championship.
“The only thing we’ve done differently, really, is a lot of hitting in the spring,” said first-year head coach Ali Scherman.
Maquoketa Valley hopes to extend its turnaround into the postseason. The Wildcats (21-15) face 14th-ranked Alburnett (28-9) in a Class 2A regional …

DES MOINES — On one hand, Jodi Gibbs was stunned.
On the other hand, she wasn’t surprised at all.
Maquoketa Valley captured the girls’ Class 2A 1,600-meter relay at the state track meet Saturday at Drake Stadium. Rachel Hoeger, Gibbs, Sam Salow and Kendra Kregel were seeded sixth heading into the finals, but won it in 4:01.56.
“I’m shocked, so surprised,” Gibbs said. “It’s an amazing feeling.”
Kregel outdueled Hudson’s Holly Halstead in the final stretch.
“I knew (Kregel) was capable of just about anything,” Gibbs said. “She doesn’t surprise me with …
