FORT DODGE — The Maquoketa Cardinals needed near-perfection. They didn’t get it.
Top-ranked Carlisle jumped in front immediately, and Seyerra Dubois’ three-run double in the top of the seventh inning broke open a 5-0 victory over the No. 9 Cardinals in a Class 3A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament Tuesday night at the Rogers Sports Complex.
“They’re the No. 1 team for a reason,” said Maquoketa Coach Sara Nelson. “To beat a team like that, you have to play flawless. We made some mistakes, and we weren’t able to redeem ourselves.”

CEDAR RAPIDS — This is the time prep tennis coaches are put to the test.
With rosters due Monday for Thursday’s Class 1A and 2A district meets, boys’ tennis coaches are challenged to find their best possible lineup.
It turns out that determining lineups for district competition is more complex than filling out a sheet with names. Coaches implore strategy to try to advance as many athletes to the state meet as well as improving the team’s chances to reach team substate.
Coaches and players have to decide whether to compete in singles …

MARION — Maybe Morgan Paige will set another scoring record. Maybe she won’t.
If she does, it’s clear it will come in the natural framework of a game.
Paige scored 30 points — 25 in an awe-inducing first half — as Class 3A No. 9 Marion blew past Maquoketa, 62-36, in a Wamac Conference interdivisional girls’ basketball game Friday night at Marion High School.
“I don’t know how to describe it. It was just a good day today,” said Paige, a senior and a University of Wisconsin signee. “I caught a lot of first …
