Maybe Zach Pechous had a big date. At the rate he and Iowa City Regina were reaching the end zone, it sure seemed like they had somewhere to be.
Pechous hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass and followed that up with a shifty 59-yard punt return for a score to help the Class 2A top-ranked Regals to a 42-6 win over Class 1A fifth-ranked BGM last night at Regina Stadium.
Regina scored four touchdowns in a seven-minute stretch in the first half behind long plays, stout defense and special teams. Pechous’ punt …

SOLON – Regina couldn’t have written a better script for its district opening baseball game against Mount Vernon.
Booming bats and solid pitching, coupled with Mount Vernon’s shaky defense made for an easy time for the Regals in a 13-1 six-inning victory.
“It went just the way we wanted it to,” Brian Romanowski said. “We got ahead early and started fast. We didn’t make many mistakes at all, and we played hard the whole game.”
Regina will face Solon at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Solon. But Regina …

Regina entered the sixth inning with just six outs left in its softball season Friday night. Trailing 1-0, the Regals had managed two hits and had left five runners on base. Even their coach had no real inkling what might be in store.
The Regals scored eight runs with those six outs and ended up turning a nail-biter into an 8-1 rout of Iowa Valley in a regional quarterfinal game at Regina’s field.
Regina (25-9) will play Jesup at 7 p.m. Monday in Vinton in the …

Graduation wasn’t kind to Iowa City Regina.
The Regals lost their pitcher and catcher from a 2009 team that finished third in the state. They lost their 3, 4, 5 and 6 batters.
But they haven’t fallen far. Maybe they haven’t slipped at all.
Regina carries a 23-9 record and a No. 5 ranking into Thursday’s Class 2A regional against North Linn (13-18) in Iowa City.
“We started out really, really strong,” said Regals Coach Jon Prottsman. “Our pitching (from Sara Kron and Mallory Dixon) has been very decent. All we ask is that …

The Regina baseball team beat Mount Vernon 7-1 Tuesday at Regina.
George Sehl had a two-run home run for the Regals, Jack Verducci had two hits with a double and a home run, Jake Lehman had two hits and two RBIs, and Drew Coffin had two hits. Tyler Nelson pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.
“It was just a good all-around effort by the team tonight,” Regina coach Andy Gahan said. “We did a nice job of hitting the ball and had six runs …

Rick Larew had to admit it. He never saw his team win.
“Sorry,” the Iowa City Regina soccer coach said after the Regals’ 3-2 double-overtime win over Fort Madison Holy Trinity in the Class 1A state championship game Saturday at Cownie Park. “I was trying to figure out how our kid with crampy legs was doing (on the sideline). I was talking to him, so I didn’t see it. You’ll have to tell me what happened.”
What happened was a gritty, gutty comeback win capped by Ryan …

Looks like Daniel Larew is getting the bonus plan.
“At the beginning of the season, I was thinking, ‘OK, if we get to state, I’ll be happy,’” the Iowa City Regina midfielder said. “I mean, we lost eight starting seniors. But when we got here, I was like ‘All right, if we win the first one, then I’ll be happy.’
“Now that we got a second win, I wanna win it all.”
Make that win it all again. Regina advanced to the Class 1A state soccer tournament championship Friday afternoon for the second …
