DES MOINES — Clear Creek-Amana’s state tournament drought is history, and all three of their wrestlers are still drinking from the fountain.

The Clippers had three qualifiers for the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 2A state wrestling tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. They are Clear Creek Amana’s first state competitors since 1994.

“It means so much to me,” Clippers 140-pounder Josh Rohret said. “We just have really been pushing ourselves this year. The coaches have been really helping us.”

Rohret is joined by fellow juniors Drew Cox (171) and Tyler Walls (189). All three lost opening round matches, but rebounded to win consolation matches and remain alive for day 2 of the event.

“I thought it was a realistic goal that every one of them could win a match,” said CCA Coach Mark Moody, who is just in his fourth year as head coach. “Maybe it was their first one. Maybe it was their wrestleback.”

There seemed to be a buzz back home. Fans displayed signs, decorated cars and used blue spray paint to leave encouraging messages in the snow. That’s important if the Clippers are going to build off this and avoid further long absences.

“Just to get that excitement built and get more spectators, wrestlers and kids from the team here to take in the atmosphere to figure out what it’s all about is huge,” Moody said.

The team didn’t necessarily envision this finish, but confidence was gained as the season progressed and wins started piling up.

“Something got us going,” Rohret said. “We all just started busting our butts in the room and it got us here.”

Rohret (32-14) claimed the Clippers first win in the consolation round, beating Centerville’s Schyler Morgan, 9-7. Cox (30-6) scored a fall in 2:54 over Clay Long after suffering a tough 11-7 loss in the final overtime period to No. 8 Trevor Pisney of Crestwood in the first round. Walls (37-9) followed Cox with a 10-0 major decision over Chariton’s Jacob Kaska.

“I’m usually here watching all these guys and saying it’d be awesome to be down there,” Rohret said. “Here I am, looking up at all the people. It’s a great feeling.”

The Raiders won their first district title since 2006.

“We wanted to get up on them early, shut the door and put them away and win this District 5,” Raiders junior lineman Austin Blythe said. “It was nice.

It was a lot of fun.”

Williamsburg handled the Clippers up front on both sides of the ball. Especially on offense.

“One thing we try to do is be balanced but be physical up front,” Williamsburg Coach Curt Ritchie said, “and I thought they did a great job of that.”

The Raiders (8-1, 7-0) rushed for 345 yards, powered by running back Cord Slaymaker, who ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns.

Slaymaker gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead when his 1-yard TD run capped the Raiders opening drive that went 72 yards on seven plays — all rushes.

Slaymaker added a 1yard touchdown before ending Williamsburg’s scoring with a 9-yard TD to make it 48-0 in the fourth.

“He’s got great vision,” Ritchie said, noting Slaymaker’s ability for improvisation at times.

They allowed only four first downs and a little more than 110 total yards, forcing two turnovers.

“He’s just elusive.” He wasn’t a one man show.

Brett Waughop added 72 yards rushing, including a 41-yard touchdown run to make it 13-0.

Tyler Greiner ran for 35 yards and contributed a pair of short touchdowns in the first half, helping Williamsburg lead 35-0 at the break.

Williamsburg mixed in an effective passing game as well. Quarterback Kelly O’Rourke threw for 55 yards, completing 4 of 5 passes including a 3-yard TD to Tyler Huedepohl on the Raiders opening drive of the second half, increasing the lead to 41-0. O’Rourke also rushed for 31 yards.

The Raiders’ defense, led by Blythe, swarmed and harassed Clippers quarterback Blaze Smith, sacking him seven times. Two consecutive safeties in the second quarter backed CCA inside their own 10 and caused a safety when a punt snap sailed out of the end zone.

“We’ve been as dominant as we have all year on defense tonight,” said Blythe, adding the Raiders were set to stop CCA’s pass attack. “We showed people we can shut down the pass and we can shut down the run.”

Blythe said he believed the Raiders are improving every day and will be a dangerous foe in the playoffs.

“I think we legitimately are,” Blythe said. “We just have to prove to everybody and earn some respect.”

Smith threw for 118 yards on 7 -of-14 passing, including going 5-for-5 in the second half. He completed on three straight passes, connecting on a 55-yard touchdown pass to Ted Hergert late for the Clippers only score. CCA (6-3, 5-2 in 3A-5) were district runner-up despite the loss thanks to Fairfield’s 20-0 win over Mount Pleasant.

He heard about it four days after the fact. From a reporter.
Smith, the quarterback at Clear Creek Amana, established an all-time Iowa best with 43 completions in the Clippers’ 40-28 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg last Friday.

Smith, the quarterback at Clear Creek Amana, established an all-time Iowa best with 43 completions in the Clippers’ 40-28 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg last Friday.

“Really?” Smith said. “That’s kind of cool. I try to stay away from the stats and keep a level head.”

Even for a level head, these are mind-bending numbers: 43 completions in 54 attempts for 430 yards and three touchdowns, plus 121 yards rushing and three more TDs.

And it’s not as if the Clippers were trying to run up the stats. The game was in doubt until the final two minutes.

Smith’s final completion eclipsed the record of 42, set by Tyler Jones of Cherokee in 2006.

Iowa’s all-time leaders for most completions in a game:

43 — Blaze Smith, Clear Creek Amana (vs. Vinton-Shellsburg, Sept. 4, 2009)
42 — Tyler Jones, Cherokee (vs. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, Sept. 16, 2006)
39 — Ben Stover, Muscatine (vs. Davenport Central, Oct. 20, 2000)
38 — T.J. Freesmeier, Central Lee (vs. Wilton, Oct. 26, 2007)
38 — Colton Hansen, Olin (vs. Edgewood-Colesburg, Oct. 29, 2004)

“Honestly, the wide receivers were getting open,” Smith said. “We talked in practice all week that everyone needed to get open.”

Those who got open, got rewarded. Josh Rohret caught 16 balls for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Ted Hergert (12 catches, 116 yards, 1 TD) and Shawn Liddell (8 catches, 76 yards) also were major contributors.

Even Smith caught a pass — off a deflection — for a yard.

“It was a busted play and the ball got batted back to me,” Smith said. “I tried to do with it what I could.”

Clear Creek Amana has a new surface — FieldTurf — and has the offensive game plan to go with it.

“We want to play pitch-and-catch,” said CCA Coach Rodney Walls. “Our receivers have choice routes to make. We try to isolate a third of the field and put our effort into that. There are three reads to make on each play.”

And Smith loves making them. Most of his throws are short, quick patterns out of a shotgun and semi-rollout.

“I like having control of the game,” he said. “Everybody can catch and everyone can run. It’s fun for everyone.”

Except opposing defensive coordinators, perhaps. In two games, Smith has 748 yards passing, 213 yards rushing and seven total TDs.

“I had pretty good stats (in a 14-7 season-opening loss to Iowa City Regina),” Smith said. “I’d have much rather won the game.”

Smith (6-0, 205) was a running back/linebacker through his sophomore year.

“Before he was a junior, I told him he was going to be our starting quarterback. His first game (last season), he threw four interceptions,” Walls said. “He’s come a long way.”

Yes, Blaze is his real first name. He said he was named after former Iowa State running back Blaise Bryant.

“It’s kind of fun reading the newspaper, seeing what kind of headlines they can come up with,” he said.

He isn’t wild about the public seeing his team’s statistics on the Internet. And he certainly isn’t crazy about his players viewing them.

“I’m a team-first guy,” said White, head softball coach at Clear Creek Amana. “I’m just kind of concerned about kids being too concerned about their batting averages.”

Here, in a nutshell, is what viewers will find: The Clippers can hit. A lot.

Class 3A No. 1 CCA, which improved to 30-0 after winning a 16-team tournament last weekend at Oxford, has a team batting average of .428. It is averaging 8.4 runs per game — more than 1.4 runs per inning.

And here’s the real kicker: Four of the state’s top 10 run-scorers are Clippers.

Ashley Akers leads the state with 50. Katy Sexton is second with 47. Melissa Walls is fifth with 36, freshman Caitlin Wnek is eighth with 34.

“We’ve put up some runs, that’s for sure,” White said. “The nice thing about our lineup is that kids in our 6, 7 and 8 spots can drive in runs.”

Wnek, a second baseman, has moved into the cleanup spot. She is batting .560, her 44 RBIs is a state-high and she has struck out only three times in 91 at-bats.

“We knew what we had in her last year,” White said. “We probably got her into the lineup a little too late. She’s very good offensively, and she plays a very good second base.”

Six Clippers are hitting .400-plus. Sexton (. 519) leads the state with 23 doubles.
