MESKWAKI – There was plenty of excitement, enthusiasm and pride at the Meskwaki Settlement School, and they were accompanied by a feeling of home.
That’s because they were home for an athletic event for the first time in the fall.
After travelling more than 2,o00 miles in their inaugural season in 2009, the Meskwaki Warriors hosted their first ever varsity football game Friday night, playing Central City in an 8-man prep football game.
The Wildcats won 62-26, but it didn’t spoil the night people on the Meskwaki Settlement have been waiting …

The western thumb of the Big East Conference, Lisbon is somewhat isolated.
“We’re on the outside edge,” said Jim Schultz, the school’s athletics director. “Eight (of our 11 conference rivals) are at least an hour and 15 minutes away.”
So it’s time to look elsewhere.
Lisbon has formally applied for membership into the Tri-Rivers Conference. If its application is accepted, Lisbon will join in 2012-13.
Tri-Rivers athletics directors and principals have green-lighted the expansion, with superintendents scheduled to vote at their annual meeting June 2.
“They’ve got some really nice athletic programs,” said North Linn …

Here’s a look at the four boys’ basketball games Saturday involving area schools. All games begin at 7 p.m.
CLASS 1A
Central City (13-11) vs. Calamus-Wheatland (19-5) at Clinton: Central City has been hurt by injuries to starters Jacob Etten and Mason Nielsen. Both are back in the lineup, which helped the Wildcats post district wins over Springville (42-40), Lone Tree (65-52) and Lisbon (63-46). Center John Rochford leads CC in scoring (15.2 ppg) and rebounding (11.3 rpg). Point guard Jeffrey Stevens averages 12.3 ppg … Calamus-Wheatland posted a big upset of …

Tonight’s 1A regional opener between the Central City Wildcats and the Springville Orioles probably wasn’t even a blip on anyone’s radar outside those two districts, but it was exactly what a great basketball game should be.
Two long time rival teams stepped out onto the floor for the chance to play another day. It didn’t matter that neither team was at the top of the Tri Rivers Conference.  It didn’t even matter that neither team has a winning regular season.  All that mattered was this game, on this night…and the two …

It’s Monticello. It’s regionals. It’s on the road.
But Cascade Coach Mike Sconsa is reasonably relaxed. Or at least diplomatic.
“There are no perfect systems, and if I throw a fit, the girls will throw a fit,” Sconsa said. “We just have to get ready. It’s another game, and we’re going to be playing tough teams.”
No. 1 Cascade (22-1) travels to Tri-Rivers Conference rival Monticello (18-6) in a Class 2A regional semifinal.
Tipoff is 7 p.m. Friday.
There’s a history here, and not a pleasant one for Sconsa.
Cascade was taken out in regionals by …

If you listened real close, you heard John Rochford call “bank.”
OK, the beefy 6-foot-4 Central City center didn’t call his banked, game-winning, buzzer-beating jumper from just outside the free-throw line. But he’ll take it and that 48-46 win over Monticello at Rivalry Saturday.
“They defended what we wanted to do really well,” Rochford said. “I came out from the block, just tried to make a play. Catch it at the top.
“That’s a little out of my range, probably 15 to 18 feet. But I got the shot and it was good. When I shot …

BROOKLYN — He began his prep basketball career playing with his brother. He’ll likely end it as his school’s all-time leading scorer.
Not bad.
BGM senior guard John Roudabush surpassed the 1,000-point mark in his career last week in the Bears’ 66-58 win over North Mahaska. He needs 18 points to become his school’s all-time leading scorer.
BGM (12-1) has a huge South Iowa Cedar League game tonight at Keota (10-1).
“It means a lot,” Roudabush said of his milestone. “It’s been lots of hard work since I was a freshman.”
Roudabush was inserted into …
