CEDAR RAPIDS — On Cedar Rapids Washington’s athletics hall of fame night, Josh Oglesby came up with a hall of fame performance.
Or at least a hall of fame minute.
It was the junior shooter’s trio of treys in that time midway through the fourth quarter that helped Washington to a 46-38 upset win over Class 4A third-ranked Cedar Rapids Jefferson last night. Hall of fame game, Josh?
“I don’t know if I’d go that far,” Oglesby said. “We need to come back Monday and work in practice and hopefully get another win …

CEDAR RAPIDS — It almost didn’t seem fair. You had one girls’ basketball team who likes to press defensively and play fast offensively and another who plays almost exclusively five players because injuries have depleted its rotation.
The outcome was predictable. Team one (Class 4A ninth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington) wore out team two (No. 15 Cedar Rapids Jefferson), riding a strong second half to a 69-47 win on hall of fame night at Washington.
“That’s our style,” said Washington guard Alissa Oney. “Push the ball, push the ball and tire you out. …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa City High lit up a dark old gym Tuesday night.
The Little Hawks shot 56 percent from the field, including 70 percent in the second half, and punished Class 4A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 76-54, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game at Jefferson High School.
“We just relaxed and hit some shots,” said City High Coach Bill McTaggart.
The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 5, but was moved back because of the Orange Bowl. The main gymnasium was booked by a wrestling meet, so the …

Former Cedar Rapids Jefferson assistant wrestling coach John Hegarty was right on when he described the ceremony as the night the names on the wall came alive.
Jefferson celebrated its rich wrestling tradition with a ceremony last Thursday, before its dual with Cedar Rapids Kennedy, referred to as 50 Years of J-Hawk State Finalists. Each state finalist in attendance was called to the center of the mat and had their former coach, or a representative of their former coach, raise their hand one more time.

DUBUQUE — Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland said it was one of those days. A satisfactory effort, but nothing spectacular from his Trojans.
Other Mississippi Valley Conference teams may beg to differ and would likely exchange outcomes any day.
West crowned five champions, tallying 244½ points, to win its seventh straight MVC tournament title Saturday at Dubuque Senior. The Trojans finished a massive 89 points ahead of runner-up Linn-Mar.
The approach is the same every year, according to West senior Nick Moore.
“It’s come in and score as many points as possible,” Moore …

CEDAR RAPIDS — First team to 30 points wins, boys. Oops, make that 27.
You expected Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Cedar Rapids Kennedy to play a low-scoring game last night at Jefferson, and they didn’t disappoint. Two strong defensive and patient offensive clubs played a slow-down affair that made local broadcasting legend Bob Brooks leave his courtside seat early and mutter something about instituting a shot clock.
It did come down to the last shot. Kennedy’s Austin Christensen had an open 3-pointer from the wing miss at the buzzer as Class 4A …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Each Cedar Rapids Kennedy starter shuffled over to the Cedar Rapids Jefferson bench after being introduced pregame last night to shake the hand of J-Hawks head coach Larry Niemeyer. It’s a gesture of sportsmanship.
The last Cougar to be introduced was center Jade Rogers. As the future Iowa Hawkeye trotted toward Niemeyer, the coach met her on the court and said something that brought a wide smile to her face.
“He just said this was the last time I’m going to face him,” said Rogers, smiling again. “I have …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Kennedy played the role of party crasher last night.
The Cougars tried to restrict the celebration to the pageantry before the meet on the evening when Cedar Rapids Jefferson honored each of the storied program’s state finalists and former coaches.
Kennedy won eight matches, claiming a 41-24 victory over Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual at Jefferson High School.
“What a great opportunity to wrestle in front of not only Jefferson legends but Cedar Rapids area legends,” Kennedy Coach Brent Paulson said, referring to the attendance of …
