No. 8 Marion navigated Benton Community’s constantly changing defense and sidestepped the Bobcats, 65-55, in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal girls’ basketball game Wednesday night at Marion High School.
“I couldn’t tell what they were running,” said Brittany Fish, who scored 20 of her game-high 25 points in the second half to carry the Indians (21-1) to their 15th straight win.
Marion will host Vinton-Shellsburg (12-10) in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association have released their final set of Class 1A and 2A dual rankings. The rankings are used to seed the state duals tournament. Teams across the state are competing in regional dual meets Wednesday to earn a berth to the State Duals tournament Feb. 27 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

Mother nature has caused a hiccup in the posteason season wrestling schedule. All but one regional dual across the state are postponed until tomorrow evening.
The Class 2A regional dual event at Winterset, featuring Centerville, Harlan, Creston/orient-Macksburg and Clarke (Osceola) is the only one that will be competed. All others are scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.

East Buchanan is attempting to claim its first state duals berth, but if the Bucs are going to end their season in Cedar Rapids they will have to earn it.
The third-ranked Bucs host a competitive Class 1A regional dual at Winthrop, featuring No. 9 Lisbon, Alburnett and West Branch. East Buchanan opens with West Branch, while Lisbon takes on Alburnett in the semifinals, starting at 6 p.m.
Opening round winners then compete for a trip to the state duals Feb. 27 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

You hate to refer to it again, but when you talk about Marion’s season, you’ve got to talk about that Williamsburg game. The Indians blew a 20-plus point lead and lost by two just before Christmas.
There’s been nary a defeat since then. Marion won its ninth in a row Saturday, drilling Benton Community, 70-48, as part of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The top six teams in the rankings have a number of wrestlers on the list. All of them have at least five wrestlers ranked. Defending state champion Ballard still leads the way with Denver-Tripoli and Davenport Assumption close behind. The state tournament could be very interesting depending upon the number of qualifiers each can take to Des Moines.

Jesup High School lost its top scorer to graduation. Its top defender, too.
But the J-Hawks haven’t lost their way.
Winners of seven straight games, the J-Hawks have moved to the forefront of the girls’ basketball race in the North Iowa Cedar League East Division.
They defeated then-2A fourth-rated Denver, 45-41, Tuesday at home.
“The girls always seem to step up when they play Denver,” said Coach Roger Oberhauser. “They’re playing as a team, and they’re really believing in their defense.”
