MOUNT VERNON — Shirley Ryan foresaw this team’s destiny years in advance.
“You could see this coming when they were 10,” said Ryan, the volleyball coach at Mount Vernon High School. “They were phenomenal when they were young kids. Then they grew, and grew, and grew.”

Prepvolleyball.com ranks Mount Vernon 32nd in its preseason national rankings.
The Mustangs were Class 2A state champions last year, finishing with a 43-1 record and a No. 38 national ranking by prepvolleyball.com. They’ll play in 3A this year, as will Waverly-Shell Rock, with is the only other Iowa team ranked — the Go-Hawks are No. 72.
