CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Washington’s Joseph Gallet wants to conclude his prep career in explosive fashion.
That finish would be deafening, considering the noise the Warrior senior made last year.
Gallet returns as the most decorated swimmer from last season’s state meet where he won three gold medals, including the 100 breaststroke title.
“I’m extremely excited for the season,” Gallet said. “Being it my last year, my senior year, I kind of want to go out with a bang.”

The Decorah girls swim team notched its second-straight top 10 statefinish this season. The VIkings finished seventh with 122.5 points. They just missed their first top 5 finish, due to being disqualified in the opening relay that they appeared to win, however, an official noticed one of the swimmers left the blocks early and made the call. Decorah swimmers rebounded and claimed six total medals at the Horne Henry Center of the Marshalltown YMCA.

MARSHALLTOWN — A bad beginning turned into a pretty good day for the Decorah Vikings.
Despite being disqualified in the opening event, Decorah rebounded for five medals and placed seventh with 122½ points at the IGHSAU state swim meet Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA.
“It was a great meet for these girls,” Decorah Coach Stephanie Huber said. “They were just fast and had a lot of best times.”

IOWA CITY – Grace Murray and Beth Eyanson formed a friendship in swimming, but it’s expanded beyond a common interest in the sport.
The Iowa City standouts are better friends than competitors, but their competitiveness will be on display Saturday during the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Swim meet at the Horne Henry Center of the Marshalltown YMCA.

The field is set for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s state swimming and diving meet this weekend at the Horne Henry Center at the Marshalltown YMCA.
The regional held at Cedar Rapids Washington is well represented in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Regional 100 fly champion Jill Broghammer of Washington leads a group of five to qualify, including Cedar Rapids Prairie-Williamsburg’s Shelby Doehrmann, Linn-Mar’s Sarah Wodnik, the Warriors’ Sami Puk and Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Lexi Scharmer.

The championship season hits full throttle Saturday as teams from across the state compete in regional swim action. State berths and regional championships are on the line. Diving portion will be held Thursday at the various sites, beginning at 5 p.m. and swimming events start at noon Saturday.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released its latest swimming power rankings. There doesn’t appear to be any changes at the top. Bettendorf still owns the top spot with Mason City and Cedar Falls close behind.
Eastern Iowa teams in the top 10 held their spots. Decorah held the seventh spot with Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Kennedy filling the next two spots. Linn-Mar is 12th in the standings.
With swimmers on the verge of tapering, not much of the individual listings changed.
