East Buchanan is attempting to claim its first state duals berth, but if the Bucs are going to end their season in Cedar Rapids they will have to earn it.
The third-ranked Bucs host a competitive Class 1A regional dual at Winthrop, featuring No. 9 Lisbon, Alburnett and West Branch. East Buchanan opens with West Branch, while Lisbon takes on Alburnett in the semifinals, starting at 6 p.m.
Opening round winners then compete for a trip to the state duals Feb. 27 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

DYERSVILLE — The celebratory meals and the congratulatory pats on the back will have to wait, because the Denver-Tripoli wrestling team wasn’t wasting any time to get back to work.
The Titans had practice scheduled just hours after they powered their way to a team title in what was considered one of the tougher sectional fields.
Denver prevailed in fine fashion, advancing 10 to next week’s district meet and winning the Class 2A sectional wrestling tournament at Beckman High School. The Titans had eight champions and tallied 265½ points, 41 more than …

Dyersville Beckman’s Tony Naber became just the second Blazer to win a Wamac Conference title with a solid 7-1 victory over West Delaware’s P.C. McEnany in the 125-pound final Saturday at Benton Community in Van Horne.
Matt Heims won the 145-pound title in 2006 for Beckman.
Naber wasn’t seeded in the top three but advanced to the final when Western Dubuque’s Jim Gotto, ranked third in 3A, injury defaulted. Naber, the school record holder for wins in a season (37 in 2008-09) had a pin and major decision in the tournament while improving …

Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Prairie have won Mississippi Valley Conference division crowns a second straight year.
With Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s win over Waterloo West last night, the Trojans locked up the MVC Mississippi Division title. West is 26-1 overall and 6-0 in the MVC, ending conference competition tonight at Dubuque Hempstead against the Mustangs and Waterloo West. It’s the fourth straight title and 10th overall for West, which owns a 30-dual MVC win streak dating to 2006.
Prairie was the last MVC team to beat West. The Hawks are 17-2 …

Former Cedar Rapids Jefferson assistant wrestling coach John Hegarty was right on when he described the ceremony as the night the names on the wall came alive.
Jefferson celebrated its rich wrestling tradition with a ceremony last Thursday, before its dual with Cedar Rapids Kennedy, referred to as 50 Years of J-Hawk State Finalists. Each state finalist in attendance was called to the center of the mat and had their former coach, or a representative of their former coach, raise their hand one more time.
Legendary wrestlers lineup up as their accomplishments …

DUBUQUE — Iowa City West Coach Mark Reiland said it was one of those days. A satisfactory effort, but nothing spectacular from his Trojans.
Other Mississippi Valley Conference teams may beg to differ and would likely exchange outcomes any day.
West crowned five champions, tallying 244½ points, to win its seventh straight MVC tournament title Saturday at Dubuque Senior. The Trojans finished a massive 89 points ahead of runner-up Linn-Mar.
The approach is the same every year, according to West senior Nick Moore.
“It’s come in and score as many points as possible,” Moore …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Kennedy played the role of party crasher last night.
The Cougars tried to restrict the celebration to the pageantry before the meet on the evening when Cedar Rapids Jefferson honored each of the storied program’s state finalists and former coaches.
Kennedy won eight matches, claiming a 41-24 victory over Jefferson in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual at Jefferson High School.
“What a great opportunity to wrestle in front of not only Jefferson legends but Cedar Rapids area legends,” Kennedy Coach Brent Paulson said, referring to the attendance of …

ALBURNETT — They are Alburnett’s dynamic duo.
The Pirates and Coach Kane Thompson benefit from, not one but two of, the best wrestlers in Class 1A.
Christopher Halblom and Tyler Shulista both own top-rankings and have propelled Alburnett’s wrestling program to new levels of success.
“I think they’re making everyone around them better,” Thompson said. “We’re pretty solid from 112 to 135 with kids that are having a great season. I think it’s because they practice with each other and feed off what Tyler and Christopher have done at the state tournament.”
The pair …
