Kylie Stannard sent an e-mail to his former Cedar Rapids Washington soccer teammates Friday to cement plans for Saturday’s tribute to their friend Adam Gorman.
“The early signs pointed to a rainy, stormy day in Cedar Rapids,” Stannard wrote. “But it looks like Gordo came through for us.”
Just as they’ve come through for him in his death. It was indeed breezy and warm at Kingston Stadium for a short ceremony before the Washington-Cedar Rapids Prairie boys’ soccer game that honored Gorman, who died of brain cancer five years ago at age …

Tanner Schilling felt like he owed his team one. He took a bad yellow card last week and missed on several opportunities.
With 15 minutes left Saturday in a tie game with state power Cedar Rapids Kennedy, the Iowa City West junior paid in full.
He took the ball off a bad Kennedy pass, nimbly dribbled around a handful of defenders and blasted a shot on goal.
Kennedy goalie Ben Feltes got his hand on it, but the ball tucked itself away into the left side of the net.
Just like that, last year’s …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Sarah Boniface has been on the receiving end of her share of hard tackles this soccer season. That’s the way it is when you’re one of the best players around, an all-state midfielder and the focus of defenses.
But the Cedar Rapids Washington senior has learned to shrug off getting knocked to the ground.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot stronger mentally,” Boniface said, thanking head coach Sean McCoy. “Sean always says that when you get knocked down, you’ve got to (get up) and smile. I’ll be so mad …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Moms know.
It was Jon Keller’s freshman year at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School, and his mother, Joni, had a feeling there was something physically wrong with him.
“I think it was November, a week before basketball practice started,” said Al Keller, Jon’s father. “My wife noticed some things going on. Jon was urinating a lot, drinking a lot. She just thought something wasn’t right.”
Joni Keller hopped online and did some research on her son’s symptoms. She narrowed her diagnosis to two things: leukemia or diabetes.
Doctors were seen and …

IOWA CITY — Bob Askelson walked around Pleasant Valley Golf Course for four hours Wednesday morning. He didn’t hit one ball and wasn’t out to get extra exercise or anything.
He was there to watch and support his daughter, Kimmy.
“I come to as many (meets) as I can,” Askelson said. “Yeah, it was a good choice to come today.”
A real good choice.
Kimmy Askelson did her dad proud with a two-over-par 74 that earned her medalist honors at the nine-school CRANDIC tournament. The Cedar Rapids Xavier junior flirted with even-par until finding …

CEDAR RAPIDS — If in retirement style, Erik Boyer placed his soccer shoes at midfield and walked off the soccer pitch for the rest of the season, you couldn’t blame him.
Going into last night’s match with Waterloo East, the Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior striker had played seven games. He had seven goals and seven assists.
Seven, seven, seven.
“Those are lucky numbers,” Boyer said.
Of course, there’s not much luck involved in Boyer’s game. He’s been an integral part of Kennedy’s second-ranked, undefeated squad.
A second-team all-stater last season, he has played at a …

Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Jarrod Uthoff said Sunday night that Indiana offered him a basketball scholarship earlier Sunday.
It’s the eighth offer for the 6-foot-8 junior: Indiana, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Creighton, Albany, Northern Colorado and Arizona State. Uthoff also met with new Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery on Saturday, but was not offered a scholarship.
“Very exciting,” Uthoff said of the Indiana offer. “It’s the Big 10. It’s an awesome opportunity.”
Uthoff said he has no timetable to make a college decision. He is scheduled to play in “open gyms” for coaches from Iowa, …

It’s safe to say recruiting has definitely picked up for Cedar Rapids Jefferson basketball forward Jarrod Uthoff and Cedar Rapids Washington swingman Josh Oglesby.
The junior duo and their families are expected to meet with new Iowa coach Fran McCaffery sometime Saturday. Uthoff and Oglesby are playing for the Iowa Barnstormers in an AAU tournament this weekend at the university.
Uthoff’s list of scholarship offers continues to grow, with Arizona State the latest. Albany, Indiana State, Creighton, Iowa State and Northern Iowa also have offered, with Indiana also supposedly close to offering.
Oglesby …

CEDAR RAPIDS — Goalkeeper Cara Evans suffered a right elbow injury in the middle of a shootout Monday night at Kingston Stadium. She thinks it’s some sort of ligament issue.
The game was held up awhile to see if Evans could continue playing. She did, making a save that helped give the Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls’ soccer team a 1-0 upset win over rival and defending Class 2A state champion Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
How fitting for these J-Hawks. They won’t wow you with a ton of flash — or goals, for that …
