Golf postseason hits stride today

Prep golfers hit the course for Iowa High School Athletic Association championship meets today as 35 sectional meets in all three classes across the state. Decorah senior Andrew Peter will look to defend his individual state title, and help lead the Vikings back to the Class 3A state meet. The Vikings, who placed fourth at state last season, travel to Charles City for a sectional with Clear Lake, Crestwood, Forest City, Hampton-Dumont, Iowa Falls-Alden and New Hampton. Lineups key to district play

CEDAR RAPIDS — This is the time prep tennis coaches are put to the test. With rosters due Monday for Thursday’s Class 1A and 2A district meets, boys’ tennis coaches are challenged to find their best possible lineup. It turns out that determining lineups for district competition is more complex than filling out a sheet with names. Saints soaring on course

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ golf team hit the ground running this season and they haven’t looked back. The Saints continued the success they had at the end of the 2009 regular season and have experienced some unprecedented success. Furnish’s strong play fueled by hard work

CEDAR RAPIDS — Megan Furnish can compete with the best golfers. The Cedar Rapids Jefferson sophomore proved that well before she swung a club for the J-Hawk varsity team. Last summer, Furnish showed her potential and she’s continued her solid play in competition during her first season of varsity competition. “It’s been really fun so far,” Furnish said. “My game’s been pretty good. Class 1A boys’ tennis district assignments

Here are the Class 1A district assignments. The top two finishers at each district, in both singles and doubles, advance to the state meet May 28 and 29 at Byrne Park Tennis Complex in Waterloo. Waterloo Columbus and Davenport Assumption host districts with Gazette area teams. South Tama plays at a district hosted by Pella Christian.

The Class 2A district assignments were released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. They begin May 13. The top two in each districts, in both singles and doubles, advance to the state meets May 28 and 29 in Waterloo (Class 1A) and Cedar Rapids' Veterans Memorial Tennis Complex (2A). Cedar Rapids Jefferson hosts a district with Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Marshalltown. Reports seem to be a little more wide spread than the girls, but likely doesn't include all Iowa prep golfers and teams. It does give you an idea of what some golfers are shooting from around the state. Linn-Mar puts an end to Kennedy’s 23-match MVC winning streak

There’s a first time for everything and the Linn-Mar boys’ tennis team proved it Saturday. None of the current Lions, including fifth-year head coach Chris Wundram, had ever notched a team victory over Cedar Rapids Kennedy. That changed. Towe’s toughness spurs breast cancer awareness efforts

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ team traded their traditional school colors for something a little more meaningful Saturday. The J-Hawks and Saints took the court for their tennis match, wearing pink shirts, in an attempt to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
