Marion blasts Center Point-Urbana, 64-47

CEDAR RAPIDS – They had almost as many points at halftime Monday night as they had the entire game back in January.

That meant a much, much easier time of it for the Marion Indians.

“It was our defensive intensity,” Marion Coach Mike Manderscheid said, after a 64-47 win over Center Point-Urbana in a Class 3A district semifinal at Xavier. “We really got after it to start the game. The guys were getting hands on balls, coming up with turnovers and converting those into layups. Having our defense turn into offense.”

A lot more offense than the first time. These teams played a Wamac Conference game in the regular season, with a Daly Quinn steal and free throw with three seconds left giving Marion a 39-38 win.

There were no late heroics needed here. Quinn was still good, leading the Indians with 18 points, but Marion (10-12) had the lead from 2-0 on.

“We thought we could attack the rim better and get easy buckets off of defensive plays,” said Quinn. “We just worked hard to get those easy buckets.”

Quinn Cannoy added 14 points for Marion, which plays Cedar Rapids Xavier (14-8) in a district final Thursday night at Linn-Mar. Believe it or not, there are four Quinns on the Indians roster: Daly Quinn, Quinn Cannoy, Devin Quinn and Deshaun Quinn.

The Quinns and a bunch of guys not named Quinn helped Marion force 20 turnovers out of Center Point-Urbana (5-17). Six-foot-5 center Levi Gatrost had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Stormin’ Pointers.

Marion is undersized, which means Xavier doesn’t seem to be a very good matchup. But these guys don’t care.

Just throw the ball up and see what happens.

“I think we can play with them,” Daly Quinn said. “We just have to come out with the same intensity we did tonight. Just keep working hard in practice the next couple of days, then see what happens.”“You know what, I haven’t seen them at all,” Manderscheid said. “I have a great group of kids that work hard. I know they won’t back down.”
