Bardsley brings Kennedy back

CEDAR RAPIDS — Three-pointer, left baseline. Big smile.

Three-pointer, right baseline. Bigger smile.

It was one of those nights for John Bardsley. One of those glorious nights.

“I was just in a groove,” Bardsley said after scoring 31 points and fueling a big second-half rally as Cedar Rapids Kennedy defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 80-73, in a highly entertaining Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball game Friday night at Jefferson High School.

“I got in a zone, and my teammates did a great job getting me the ball. They said, ‘Keep shooting, keep shooting.’ ”

Why not?

Bardsley hit for 23 second-half points as the Cougars erased a 10-point halftime deficit. He hit three straight long balls early in the fourth quarter as Kennedy seized control, warranting those wide grins and a couple shrugs after the ball settled through the net.

A senior, Bardsley was playing his third game back after missing a month with a broken bone in his shooting hand.

But he’s not exactly a “one-game wonder,” as Jefferson’s student section suggested. He scored 18 points against Dubuque Hempstead, 18 against Linn-Mar, then went off for 31 Friday.

“He’s a really good shooter,” said Kennedy Coach Jon McKowen. “And since he came back, he’s been playing with a different fire.”

Trailing 41-31 at intermission, the Cougars (13-4, 9-3) made their move midway through the third quarter. Bardsley hit a 3-pointer in an 11-0 run as Kennedy grabbed a 52-46 advantage.

Kennedy shot 67 percent (16 of 24) from the field in the second half, which was enough to neutralize a 56-percent night for the J-Hawks (5-11, 3-9).

“It starts with getting stops on defense,” McKowen said. “We’ve got so many guys to can┬áspread the floor. We’re a transition team.”

Cole Murdock added 18 points for Kennedy. Anthony Carter posted 14 points and seven assists.

Tyler Konigsmark paced Jefferson with 21 points, matching Bardsley’s five triples. Jacob Olson and Brandon Wiederin added 13 points apiece, Jake Van Oort scored 11.
