Pins power Trojans past No. 4 Prairie, 36-30

IOWA CITY – The progress is paying dividends.

The work Iowa City West has invested in practice has yielded a nice return, including two straight wins over top-five opponents in 48 hours.

The Trojans received a fall from senior Chris Walters in the final match, beating Class 3A fourth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie, 36-30, in a Mississippi valley Conference dual Thursday night at West. The victory came on the heels of a 43-23 win over No. 5 Linn-Mar on Tuesday.

“I think we’ve continued to get better,” West Coach Mark Reiland said. “They are way out in front of where we were at the start of the season.”

Seventh-ranked West (19-6, 10-1 MVC) was staring up from the bottom of a 22-6 hole when they seized control of the dual. The Trojans’ seventh-rated Donovan Doyle swung the pendulum in their favor with a 3-2 win over No. 10 Jarod Cadena. The victory began a four-match streak where West grabbed the lead with four matches remaining.

“We’re pretty good on top,” Reiland said. “We knew once we got up in that range we were sitting pretty good. We went out and put them away.”

Mitch Yoerger ignited the Trojans’ upper weights with the first of three consecutive first-period falls. He decked Tyler Pasker in just 50 seconds at 195. Micah Kelsay, ranked fifth at 195, moved up to 220 and needed just 1:10 to pin Corey Meyer.

Heavyweight Paul Pelfrey, who has battled injury most of the season, struck a quick blow, pinning Jackson Hesseltine in six seconds, giving West a 27-22 lead. The fast fall tied Derek St. John’s school record.

“When one of us starts getting going it’s easy just to feed off that energy and get a pin in the next match,” Kelsay said. “It definitely helps. It is a big momentum boost.”

West was powered by pins, posting five in its seven victories. Jakeb Bakken opened the dual with a third-period fall at 132, teaming with Walters to give West bookend pins.

“We lost a couple that we thought we could win,” Kelsay said, “so the pins were pretty crucial in getting the (team) win.”

Prairie received a fall from second-ranked Josh Wenger at 138 and fourth-ranked 152-pounder Trey Blaha. Skyler St. John, Marcus England (106) and Sam Uthoff (120) added major decisions for the Hawks (12-2, 9-1 MVC).

St. John, ranked third, tallied four takedowns and five nearfall points in a 15-4 major decision over No. 6 John Milani at 160.

Prairie opened the dual with a 52-18 win over Cedar Falls, which also lost to West, 50-18.
