Prairie pins way to sweep over Waterloo West, Xavier

CEDAR RAPIDS – Cedar Rapids Prairie powered its way to a pair of dominant wins.

The fourth-ranked Hawks remained atop the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division, handling Cedar Rapids Xavier and Waterloo West on Thursday night at Prairie. The Hawks beat West, 72-5, and capped the night with a 53-12 win over Xavier. The MVC double dual was televised on KCRG 9.2 and is scheduled to be replayed Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.

“I was really happy with the way the guys got after it,” Prairie Coach Blake Williams said. “Both of those teams have quite a few good kids.”

Prairie (10-1, 7-0 MVC) won 13 of 14 weights, including nine by fall, against the Wahawks. Skyler St. John (160) and Nick Hogan (170) opened with pins, setting up Jarod Cadena at 182. Cadena faced state finalist Kyler Mathews, who dropped down to 182 for the first time this season. Cadena (19-5)  scored the opening takedown and then added one in sudden victory overtime, beating second-ranked Mathews, 6-4, and handing him just his second loss this season.

“I think Jarod Cadena made a good statement with that win,” Williams said. “He got everybody pumped up and it kind continued after that.”

The Hawks extended the impressive performance into the final dual of the night, winning 10 weights against the Saints. Cadena, Chase St. John (126), Josh Wenger (138) and 152-pounder Trey Blaha added falls for Prairie. Second-ranked Wenger (16-0) notched his 100th career win with the pin. Dylan Kleinschmidt (113) added a technical fall.

“That is what we stress and try to get each meet,” Williams said. “The pins were good. It’s good practice for when you get in meets that are really close and you need those bonus points. Overall, it was a pretty good day. Hopefully, it will carry over to the weekend.”

Prairie travels to a tournament Friday and Saturday in Geneseo, Ill.

Xavier (9-16, 1-6) received three major decisions from Sean Ickes (170), Clint Lembeck (132) and 145-pound Nick Drahozal. All three went 2-0, recording wins against Waterloo West.

The Wahawks (11-14, 5-4) started the night with a 39-38 win over Xavier. Defending state champion and top-ranked 195-pounder Marcus Harrington tallied two pins, improving to 31-0, for Waterloo West.
