City handles Xavier, pushes to 4-0

CEDAR RAPIDS — In the words of Tom Lilly, Iowa City High has the three prerequisites for a championship-level team.

“They have a point guard. They have a wing shooter. And they have that post,” Lilly said.

Yeah, they have that post.

Haley Lorenzen registered 30 points and 11 rebounds — and did it on a ho-hum shooting night — as Class 5A second-ranked City High handled 4A No. 3 Cedar Rapids Xavier, 68-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game Friday night at Ron Thillen Gymnasium.

“I didn’t play my best game, but my teammates stepped up and made shots,” said Lorenzen, a 6-foot-3 senior who has signed with the University of Florida.

Gators Coach Amanda Butler was in attendance to watch her recruit. Lorenzen said she wasn’t pressing because of Butler’s presence.

“You always want to impress your future coach,” said Lorenzen, who made a solid but not overwhelming 13-of-24 shots from the field. “But, no, I wasn’t pressing. I know she’ll love me regardless.”

City High (4-0 overall, 2-0 MVC) came into the game with an average margin of victory of about 50 points. The Little Hawks had to work a little harder Friday.

Xavier (3-1, 1-1) held a 19-17 lead when Hayley Deutmeyer made a steal and converted a layup early in the second quarter, and the Saints were still in contention at halftime, trailing 36-29.

Then the Little Hawks outscored the Saints 17-7 in the third quarter to gain comfort.

“We can shoot better,” said City High Coach Bill McTaggart. “It felt like we shot 20 percent. We gave up the baseline too much, and I’ll emphasize that until April.

“But we controlled tempo, and we controlled the glass.”

Courtney Joens added 15 points and seven steals for the Little Hawks. She’s the shooting wing to which Lilly was referring. Kiera Washpun, the point guard, tacked on 10 points and six assists.

City High enjoyed a 34-21 rebounding advantage.

Deutmeyer scored 17 to lead the Saints.

“I’m happy we made them sweat a little bit,” Lilly said. “Sure,¬†we’d have loved to have won the game, but we thank (City High) for helping us get better for later in the season.”
