CEDAR RAPIDS — Here’s the phrase coaches and teams want to hear: “You are going to the state tournament.”
That statement will resound around Solon Wednesday as the Spartans and their fans relive a Class 4A regional final victory over Clear Creek Amana, 25-18, 25-17 and 25-17, Tuesday night at Cedar Rapids Washington. Solon (31-2) opens against Indianola (29-10) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The second ranked Spartans were in control throughout, trailing only once at 1-0 in the first set.
“We came out pretty aggressively early, which helped us,” said Solon Coach Peter Gustin. “Clear Creek came out strong at the beginning, and we needed to push past that.”
The second set troubled Gustin.
“We had seven missed serves in the second set,” he said. “It was almost a miracle that we were able to win it.”
In that second set, CCA closed to 15-12 before Solon outscored the Clippers 10-5 to close the win. The third set was all Solon; they led 23-9 before coasting to the win.
“We were able to get a lot of our girls some playing time in that third set,” Gustin said. “It will help them a great deal the next time they get into the match, and that’s a positive.”
This will be the third straight visit to the tournament for the Spartans. Last season, they lost a five-set heartbreaker to Charles City in the 4-A Championship game.
