Shakeup in Class A rankings

Five in, five out.

That’s the new look of the Class A top 10 in The Gazette’s weekly football rankings.

Half of last week’s ranked teams were defeated and fell out, making way for five new teams. Included in that group is Akron-Westfield (2-0), which debuts at No. 5.

Cedar Rapids Xavier's Brendan Miller runs for a touchdown in the Saints' 44-0 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Friday. The Saints remain No. 1 in the Class 4A poll by The Gazette. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)

There is one minor change at the top of the six classes.

Waukon (2-0), which moved into a first-place tie in Class 2A with Carroll Kuemper (2-0) last week, took sole possession of the No. 1 spot this week after handling Charles City. The Indians have started with two straight shutouts of 3A competition.

Four teams are unanimous No. 1s.

Cedar Rapids Xavier (2-0) received all four votes in Class 4A after blanking Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 44-0, last week. Sioux City Heelan (2-0) defeated its second straight intracity rival last week, and is unanimous in 3A.

Iowa City Regina (2-0) won its 44th straight game in convincing fashion — 38-0 over Solon — and garnered all the first-place votes in 1A, and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (2-0) is unanimous in Eight Man.

BGM (2-0) remains No. 1 in Class A, just ahead of West Lyon.

Defending 3A champion Decorah (2-0) climbed into a tie for second in that class after handling Marion, 34-7.

One Response to Shakeup in Class A rankings

  1. Can someone please explain to me how the Jefferson football players get to get out of school early to have practice so they can attend the homecoming parade? How is this helping our test scores in the CRCSD. I always thought it was academics first then athletics in the Cedar Rapids Schools.
