CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Xavier softball coach Nikki Price got a good birthday present Thursday night, with a doubleheader sweep against Linn-Mar.
“It felt fantastic,” said Saints sophomore Erin Drahozal about getting two wins on Price’s birthday. “She deserves it.”
The mercy rule ended the first game in the third inning, 13-1, and the second ended, 4-2, in last night’s Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.
After a fast start by the Lions with the home run by sophomore Alexis Kelsey in the first inning of the first game, the Saints answered back by scoring nine runs in the same inning. Freshman Jamie Feltes and junior Allison Schwach each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Courtney Colston also added two RBIs.
“I told the girls when the opportunity is there, take advantage of it and we capitalized on them today,” Price said. “And I tell the them we have to score more than the other team to win and have to put pressure on the defense to do that.”
Kelsey was charged with the loss for the Lions, throwing only two innings of work and giving up 11 runs on eight hits and striking out five.
Saints Drahozal pitched both games, only giving up three runs on eight hits in 10 total innings.
“She had a couple of tough innings, but got out of them. She slipped out a little bit, but she refocused and got herself out of those innings,” Price said.
“Coach told me to stay poised,” Drahozal said about her pitching performance in the second game. “And I knew I had confidence in myself to get out of those innings. You can’t let up in those situations.”
The Saints will play in the Iowa City West Classic Tournament at the University of Iowa this weekend and the Lions will host Kennedy on Monday.
