CEDAR RAPIDS – The Xavier track and field teams are wrapping up their season this weekend at the state championships in Des Moines.
Before this week’s events, the teams have varying degrees of success.
The boys’ team participated in the Drake Relays held in Des Moines in late April.
Senior Craig Murtha placed 10th in the discus and senior Nick Steingreaber placed fourth in the 100-meter dash. The 400 relay team placed eighth in the preliminary rounds, but did not make the finals.
The MVC Divisional held at Kingston took place on May 6. The boys finished in sixth place with 39 points. Senior Cal Stovie ran his first meet of the season, after injuring his ACL in football, and ran on the 400 relay, which placed third in 44.20 seconds. Murtha placed third in the shot put and second in the discus.
At the state qualifying meet on May 9 at Linn-Mar, Steingreaber finished second in the 100, freshman Dylan Eller placed sixth in the 200 meter and sophomore Noah Clasen finished fourth in the 400 hurdles. The distance medley realy team, as well as the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams, finished fifth. Murtha placed third in shot put and won the discus.
“I will be going to Utah State University to study aviation and finance,” Steingreaber said, reflecting on his career. “I want to thank Cal Stovie and my parents for pushing me to be faster.”
“The coaching staff this season was really supportive,” junior Molly Breitbach said. “I loved being a part of a team that has improved and been successful.
The 400 relay team placed 23rd out of 80 teams in the preliminary rounds at the Drake Relays. On April 30, the Saints finished seventh at the eight-team Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational The team then participated in the MVC Divisional in Cedar Falls on May 6 and placed seventh with 19 points.
On May 9, Xavier ran in the state qualifying meet at Linn-Mar and finished eighth with 24 points. Breitbach placed fifth in the 100 dash and the 400 and 1,600 relay teams finished fifth. Freshman Meghan Joens placed third for the discus.
The Xavier track season ends this weekend at the state track meet in Des Moines.
