Friday’s games at the boys’ state basketball tournament:
CLASS 4A SEMIFINAL
No. 1 Iowa City West (24-0) vs. No. 4 Dubuque Senior (23-1)
Time: 3:15 p.m.
Quarterfinal Games: West rallied from six points down late and beat West Des Moines Dowling, 63-59, in overtime. Senior had a much easier time with Des Moines Roosevelt, 58-41.
Synopsis: These teams met in the regular season, with West winning at home by 10. The Trojans got on top early, then surived a Senior rally late in the third quarter and early in the fourth that was spurred by West foul trouble. Couple of big questions here? Did the Trojans, who won their 50th straight game against Dowling, get their one bad game out of their system? They were 1 of 15 from 3-point range, which can’t happen again. Another question is how will West combat Senior’s size? The Rams go 6-foot-9, 6-7, 6-5 and 6-5 in their starting lineup, and West was dominated inside by Dowling’s Jon Wisnieski. Senior will obviously want a slow tempo, while West will want to push the ball offensively. Which style wins out could determine which team wins.
Quotable: “I think we just need to come out and be ready for what they’re going to do. We know they’re tall, they’re going to rebound. We just have to play West High basketball.” – West’s Jeremy Morgan
“That was frustrating to watch because I know we’re better than that. Offensively, we stood around, turned it over a little bit. Missed some pretty easy shots. That’s the way you lose a game right there. You get a little tight, you could tell we were getting a little tight. They attacked us really well. Give them credit. I thought our defense was the worst it’s been in two or three weeks.” – West Coach Steve Bergman on the win over Dowling.
Prediction: West by 7.
