Assumption romps by Cascade

DES MOINES — The Davenport Assumption students knew at 10-0.

Mike Sconsa had a feeling earlier than that.

Top-ranked Assumption solved the vaunted zone defense of No. 4 Cascade, drilling 10 3-pointers in a 63-26 Class 3A semifinal rout at the girls’ state basketball tournament Thursday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

“Three-pointers have always been something we like,” said Assumption’s Danielle Moore. “It’s one of our stronger points.

“We know they take a lot of pride on their defense, and they’re very active. But we did a good job preparing for it, and we were ready for it.”

Assumption (24-2) chases its third straight title at 8 p.m. Friday, when it faces No. 3 Estherville-Lincoln Central (23-3).

Thursday’s outcome was never in doubt, as the Assumption student section pointed out. With three 3-pointers in the books and a 10-0 score on the board, they chanted, “This one’s over.”

Sconsa was asked after the game when he knew his team was in trouble.

“When we beat Bondurant-Farrar (in the quarterfinals Tuesday),” he said. “I watched film on Assumption, and there was only so much we could do. The way they attack and the way they keep (the opposition) out of things…they’re a great, great basketball team.”

Cascade came into the game allowing 27.5 points per game, the lowest figure of anybody in the state. But the Knights handled the Cougars’ 2-3 zone efficiently and effectively.

The Cougars played their best stretch of the game after that 10-0 opening surge, getting within 14-7 after one period.

But it was 33-11 by halftime, and the margin continued to increase steadily.

“We knew we had to play well, but we couldn’t hit shots,” said Molly Vanderhaar. “That was our downfall.”

Cascade made 6 of 35 field goal attempts — 17.1 percent.

Carolyn Trumm was a bright spot, posting 14 points and six rebounds in 14 minutes.

“Coach told me I was going to have a good game,” said the sophomore post. “I’m happy we got this far — no regrets. And I’m looking forward to coming back.”

Eleven Knights scored, led by Kate Fennelly (12 points) and Moore (11).
