State GBB: Thursday’s games

Thursday’s games at the girls state basketball tournament:

CLASS 2A SEMIFINAL

No. 14 Maquoketa Valley (20-5) vs. No. 2 Lawton-Bronson (25-1)

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Coaches: Scot Moenck is 162-69 in 10 years, including 123-41 in seven years at Maquoketa Valley. Trish Martin is 43-7 in two seasons at Lawton-Bronson.

Key players: Renee Huber (5-7, sr.) leads Maquoketa Valley at 13.1 points per game. Heidi Hoeger (5-10, sr.) adds 11.1. Lawton-Bronson is the state’s most prolific team at 81 points per game. Josie Kopal (5-10, sr.) leads the way at 19.6 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.

How they got here: Maquoketa Valley upset No. 3 IKM-Manning, 65-57, in the quarterfinals. Lawton-Bronson fought past Iowa City Regina, 71-67.

CLASS 3A SEMIFINAL

No. 4 Cascade (23-2) vs. No. 1 Davenport Assumption (23-2)

Time: 3:15 p.m.

Coaches: Mike Sconsa is 172-42 in nine years at Cascade. Mallory Youngblut is 48-4 in two years at Assumption.

Key players: Abbey Meyer (5-2, sr.) paces Cascade at 8.0 points per game, and Brianna Hostert (5-10, sr.) adds 6.6. Danielle Moore (5-7, sr.) is Assumption’s top player at 13.1 ppg. Kate Fennelly (5-10, sr.) and Hailey Schneden (6-2, sr.) add 9.7 and 9.3, respectively. 

How they got here: Cascade held No. 5 Bondurant-Farrar more than 25 minutes without a basket in a 33-26 quarterfinal win. Assumption plastered Red Oak, 71-25.

CLASS 4A SEMIFINAL

No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier (15-9) vs. No. 1 Sioux City Heelan (21-3)

Time: 8:30 p.m.

Coaches: Tom Lilly is 466-197 in 28 seasons, including 278-95 in 15 years at Xavier. Darron Koolstra owns an 86-15 mark at Heelan.

Key players: Ashley Stulken (6-2, sr.) paces Xavier at 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Hayley Deutmeyer (5-8, jr.) adds 7.4 per game.MaKayla Augustine (5-8, sr.) scores 14.7 ppg for Heelan. Jenna Bork (5-7, jr.) adds 11.8. 

How they got here: Xavier got past No. 7 Lewis Central, 50-45, in the quarterfinals. Heelan handled Dubuque Wahlert, 63-47.
