State GBB: Wednesday’s games

Wednesday’s games at the girls state basketball tournament:


No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier (14-9) vs. No. 7 Lewis Central (20-3)

Time: 10 a.m.

Tournament history: Xavier is a qualifier for the 10th time and won championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Lewis Central is making its fourth appearance, its first since 2005.

Coaches: Tom Lilly is 465-197 in 28 years overall, including 277-95 in 15 years at Xavier. Derek Archer is in his first year at Lewis Central and is 20-3.

Key players: Ashley Stulken (6-2, sr.) averages 9.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game to lead Xavier. Aubrey Norville (5-10, sr.) paces Lewis Central at 16.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Cedar Rapids Washington (17-6) vs. No. 2 Ankeny (19-4)

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Tournament history: Washington is making its 12th appearance, its sixth since 2005. The Warriors were state champions in 1988 and 1995. Ankeny is at state for the 26th time and had won nine titles.

Coaches: Frank Howell is 299-149 in 19 years, including 178-60 in 10 seasons at Washington.Scott DeJong is 510-116 in 18 years overall and 407-102 in 14 years at Ankeny. DeJong has taken 18 teams to state, with six championships.

Key players: Dani Franklin (6-1, jr.) leads Washington at 17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Abby Herb (6-0, sr.) adds 14.0 points per game, Aleena Hobbs (5-10, jr.) scores at an 11.3-point pace. Brittany Hedrick (5-7, sr.) averages 12.1 points for Ankeny. Jaali Winters (6-3, soph.) adds 11.7.

No. 10 Iowa City West (18-5) vs. No. 2 Mason City (20-3)

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Tournament history: Reigning big-school champion Iowa City West is making its third state trip, all in the last three years. Same for Mason City — three trips, three in a row.

Coaches: B.J. Mayer is 231-118 in 15 seasons overall, including 104-38 in six years at West. Curt Klaahsen is 237-153 in 17 seasons, including 83-54 in six years at Mason City.

Key players: Ally Disterhoft (6-0, sr.) is an Iowa signee and leads West at 26.1 points per game, the most in the state. Iowa State signee Jadda Buckley (5-8, sr.) paces Mason City at 13.3 ppg. Cortni Rush (5-10, sr.) adds 10.5 points and 6.5 boards per game.
