State GBB: Tuesday’s games

Tuesday’s games at the girls state basketball tournament:

CLASS 2A QUARTERFINAL

No. 14 Maquoketa Valley (19-5) vs. No. 3 IKM-Manning

Time: 10 a.m.

Tournament history: Maquoketa Valley is making its fifth appearance, its first since 2004. IKM-Manning is at state for the fourth time, all since 2009. The Wolves were 2009 champions.

Coaches: Scot Moenck is 161-69 in 10 years, including 122-41 in seven seasons at Maquoketa Valley. Gene Rasmussen is 289-60 in 14 years, including 111-16 in five seasons at IKM-Manning.

Key players: Renee Huber (5-7, sr.) leads Maquoketa Valley at 13.1 points per game. Heidi Hoeger adds 11.1 ppg. Senior Kaylee Blake paces IKM-Manning at 18 points per game; sophomores Kaylee Rasmussen and Morgan Muhlbauer add 12.1 ppg apiece.

CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS

No. 4 Cascade (22-2) vs. No. 5 Bondurant-Farrar (17-6)

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Tournament history: Cascade is making its third appearance, its first since playing second in 2A in 2009. Bondurant-Farrar is in the field for the sixth time and the second year in a row.

Coaches: Mike Sconsa is 171-42 in nine years at Cascade. Steve Neville is 77-34 in five seasons at Bondurant-Farrar.

Key players: Abbey Meyer (5-2, jr.) leads Cascade’s defense-first attack, averaging 8 points per game. Brianna Hostert (5-10, sr.) adds 6.6 ppg. Ashley Burrows (5-9, jr.) paces the Lady Jays at 12.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Madi Atzen (5-6, jr.) adds 9.3 ppg.

No. 13 Mid-Prairie (18-7) vs. No. 2 MOC-Floyd Valley (23-1)

Time: 3:15 p.m.

Tournament history: Mid-Prairie is making its sixth appearance. The Godlen Hawks were 2A champions in 2002. MOC-FV is here for the seventh time, the third year in a row. The Dutch were 3A runners-up last year.

Coaches: Marc Pennington is 116-116 in 11 years overall, 96-92 in eight years at Mid-Prairie. Gary Robertson is 311-166 in 22 years overall. He’s in his first year at MOC-FV.

Key players: Mariah Swartzentruber (5-8, sr.) leads the Golden Hawks at 10.4 points per game. Alexis Conaway (6-0, jr.) paces the Dutch at 18.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and nearly 5 steals per game.

CLASS 4A QUARTERFINAL

No. 3 Benton Community (21-2) vs. No. 8 Harlan (21-2)

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Tournament history: Benton has qualified for the third straight year and the third time overall. Harlan is making its 10th appearance, its first since 2009.

Coaches: Laurie Donald is 160-54 in nine years at Benton Community. Zach Klaassen is in his first year at Harlan and owns a 21-2 record.

Key players: UNI recruit Madison Weekly (5-7, sr.) leads Benton at 18.8 points per game and has collected 105 steals. Alyssa Wiebel (5-7, fr.) adds 11.9 ppg. Jess Schaben (6-1, soph.) leads the Cyclones at 9.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Class 3A Quarterfinals

Red Oak (13-11) vs. Davenport Assumption (22-2), 11:45 p.m.
