State GBB: Area capsules

Capsules on area teams that have qualified for the girls state basketball tournament:

BENTON COMMUNITY (Class 4A)

Coach — Laurie Donald (9th year, 160-54)

Top players — UNI signee Madison Weekly (5-7, sr.) leads the Bobcats in scoring (18.8 points per game), assists (3.3) and steals (4.6). She missed last year’s tournament with a broken wrist. Alyssa Wiebel (5-7, fr.) provides 11.9 points per game while Sara Petrzelka (5-11, sr.) adds 8.8.

Record and ranking — 21-2, No. 3

Tournament history — 3rd appearance, all in the last three years.

First-round opponent — Bobcats face No. 8 Harlan (21-2) at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

 

CASCADE (Class 3A)

Coach — Mike Sconsa (9th year, 171-42)

Top players — Abbey Meyer (5-2, jr.) leads the team in scoring (8.0 points per game), and her 76 steals ignite the team defensively. Brianna Hostert (5-10, sr.) adds 6.6 points per game and a team-high 4.1 rebounds per contest. Carolyn Trumm (5-9, soph.) provides 6.3 ppg off the bench.

Record and ranking — 22-2, No. 4

Tournament history — 3rd appearance. Class 2A runner-up in 2009.

First-round opponent — Cougars face No. 5 Bondurant-Farrar (17-6) at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

 

CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON (Class 5A)

Coach — Frank Howell (19th year, 299-149; 10th year at Washington, 178-60)

Top players — Dani Franklin (6-1, jr.) is a versatile inside-outside player that averages 17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, both team highs. Abby Herb (6-0, sr.) adds 14.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game; Aleena Hobbs (5-10, jr.) scores at a 11.3-point clip.

Record and ranking — 17-6, unranked

Tournament history — 12th appearance, sixth in last nine years. Champions in 1988 and 1995.

First-round opponent – Warriors face No. 2 Ankeny (19-4) at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

 

CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER (Class 4A)

Coach — Tom Lilly (28th year, 465-197; 15th year at Xavier, 277-95)

Top players — Ashley Stulken (6-2, sr.) leads a defensive-minded, balanced team at 9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Five others score at least 5.5 ppg. Sarah Dickes (5-6, sr.) is among the 4A tournament steals leaders, with 82.

Record and ranking – 14-9, No. 5

Tournament history — 10th appearance, all since 2000. Saints won state titles in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

First-round opponent — Saints face No. 7 Lewis Central (20-3) at 10 a.m. Wednesday,

 

IOWA CITY REGINA (Class 2A)

Coach — Clark Anderson (3rd year, 58-13)

Top players — Jenna Lehman (jr.) does it all for the Regals. She leads the team in scoring (16.5 points per game) and rebounds (5.3 boards per game) as well as assists (60), steals (89) and blocks (21). Katie Wick (jr.) adds 7.9 points per game.

Record and ranking — 19-4, unranked

Tournament history — 3rd appearance. Last trip was in 2003.

First-round opponent — Regals face No. 2 Lawton-Bronson (24-1) at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

IOWA CITY WEST (Class 5A)

Coach — B.J. Mayer (15th year, 231-118; 6th year at West, 104-38)

Top players — University of Iowa recruit Ally Disterhoft (6-0, sr.) is the state’s top scorer at 26.1 points per game, and also averages a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game. Dani Craig (5-7, soph.) adds 11.2 points and 3.9 assists per game.

Record and ranking — 18-5, No. 10

Tournament history — 3rd appearance, and third in a row. Won the 2012 4A state title.

First-round opponent — Women of Troy face No. 3 Mason City (20-3) at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.

 

MAQUOKETA VALLEY (Class 2A)

Coach — Scot Moenck (10th year, 161-69; 7th year at Maquoketa Valley, 122-41)

Top players — Renee Huber (5-7, sr.) is the leading scorer at 13.1 points per game while Heidi Hoeger (5-10, sr.) adds 11.1. Nicole Kudrna (5-11, jr.) contributes 9.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per contest.

Record and ranking — 19-5, No. 13

Tournament history — 5th appearance, first since 2004. Class 2A runner-up in 2003.

First-round opponent — Wildcats face No. 3 IKM-Manning (23-1) at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

MID-PRAIRIE (Class 3A)

Coach – Marc Pennington (11th year, 116-116; 8th year at Mid-Prairie, 96-92)

Top players — Mariah Swartzentruber (sr.) is the leading scorer (10.4 points per game) and rebounder (6.3 boards per game). Mallory McArtor (sr.) adds 9.6 points per game while Meghan Redlinger (sr.) is the playmaker with 90 assists and 93 steals.

Record and ranking — 18-6, No. 13

Tournament history — 6th appearance, first since 2004. Class 2A state champion in 2002.

First-round opponent — Golden Hawks face No. 2 MOC-Floyd Valley (23-1) at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
