Girls’ basketball roundup: Maquoketa Valley advances to Des Moines

Maquoketa Valley is head to Des Moines.

The Wildcats advanced to the girls’ state basketball tournament with a 39-30 Class 2A substate final win over North Butler last night in Oelwein.

Maquoketa Valley (19-5) snapped the Bearcats’ 19-game winning streak.

Heidi Hoeger led the Wildcats with 11 points and Brooke Wooten and Renee Huber added 10 each. They play IKM-Manning Feb. 26 in Des Moines.

“They’re a good team,” North Butler Coach Kevin Clipperton told the Mason City Globe-Gazette.  “They didn’t make very many shots, it was all from the free-throw line. That’s where we knew we had to keep them off of. They were more aggressive and we had to finish around the hoop.”

COLO-NESCO 57, MESKWAKI 36 — The most successful season in the brief history of Meskwaki Settlement girls’ basketball came to an end in Newton in this Iowa Star Conference rubber match.

Meskwaki finishes 20-5.
