DES MOINES — Don’t call it a comeback.
A wrestle-back, yes, but Cedar Rapids Prairie’s fifth-ranked 106-pounder Sam Uthoff isn’t dwelling on the past — whether it be the knee injury he sustained in state duals, or his near-upset of No. 2 Jacob Schwarm of Bettendorf in his opening bout Thursday.
“I was going to go no matter what,” Uthoff said when asked about the injury, which he described as more of a tweak.
Uthoff — who easily won his consolation match Thursday — declined to discuss the tense bout with Schwarm, which ended in an 11-9 loss.
Uthoff charged back from a 9-2 deficit and nearly pinned Schwarm in the second period.
“That match is history,” said Uthoff, who enters Friday at 30-8. “It was over. I’m focusing on the next matches now.”
The freshman could still finish as high as third.
“Nobody’s 100 percent this time of year,” he added. “So it’s not really a setback.”
