The Midland Eagles posted a perfect round to open the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 1A state wrestling tournament Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Kyle Pegorick (132), T.J. Bowen at 138 and 182-pounder Ryan Leonard each won their first-round match, but it was the way they won that as impressive. The trio did not allow a single point.

Fifth-ranked Pegorick (48-2) edged No. 8 Alexander Schmitz, of Carroll Kuemper, 1-0. Bowen (46-4) also had a tight match, beating Audubon’s ninth-ranked Chase Petersen, 2-0. Leonard (45-3) had more room to breathe, dominating Cardinal Community’s Dustin Miller, 16-0.
