Amling answers with actions

DES MOINES – Edgewood-Colesburg’s Sawyer Amling declined to speak with media.

Instead, he let his actions and Vikings’ coach Alex Hanna do the talking for him.

Second-ranked 126-pounder Amling improved to 23-0 with a pin in 2:29 over Eddyville-Blakesburg’s Cody Brown in the first round of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 1A state tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena.

Amling has his sights solely fixed on the finals.

“Sawyer has been very focused all year long,” Hanna said. “He’s been working¬†really ¬†hard. At this time of the year, he’s been wrestling his best.”

Last year, Amling entered state highly ranked as a freshman but faced three-time state champion in his first bout. Amling rebounded to finish seventh. Hanna said the Ed-Co staff is happy with Amling’s status mentally and physically, and he is ready to take on all comers.

“It’s good to be on the front side, and one-and-done today,” Hanna said. “They’re only going to get tougher here on out.”

Amling faces Aplington-Parkersburg’s Shane Poppens (35-10) in the quarterfinal round. Poppens upset Clarion-Goldfield’s Joel Haberman, recording a pin in 4:26.
