For high school bowlers across the state, it’s the time of year where the rubber meets the road. Or, in this case, when the bowling ball meets the pins.
Regional tournaments for girls and districts for boys are Thursday. The winner at each location, along with the two highest pin totals, qualifies for the state tournament next week in Des Moines.
Cedar Rapids Xavier senior Tara Trcka is looking for her fourth trip to state. She won the individual title two years ago.
“I try not to think too much about the individual event,” Trcka said. “I just try to go out and try to be positive and bowl with confidence.”
It must be working. She ranks second in the state with a 217 average and can be considered a favorite in Class 1A. Though she is expected to do well in the event, Trcka is very excited about the Saint’s chances.
“Our team is coming together at the right time,” she said. “Our scores are getting higher and we have been bowling very well lately.”
The Xavier girls finished the regular season at 7-3, third in the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference.
“We are hitting our peak at the right time and that’s important this time of year,” Trcka said.
Xavier and Marion will compete at the Cherry Lanes in Dubuque on Thursday. Jefferson, Kennedy, Linn-Mar, Iowa City West and Iowa City High will be at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center. Cedar Rapids Prairie and Washington will be at Clinton.
