West Marshall finishes seventh

West Marshall places seventh

West Marshall’s state tournament experience ended a little more enjoyably than it started.

The Trojans faced controversy to start when a photo was posted to an online Twitter account, showing a derogatory message written on the arms of some of their wrestlers that was directed at regional dual opponent Don Bosco. The Iowa High School Athletic Association allowed both schools to handle the discipline, which included community service, according to radio reports.

West Marshall (23-9) made its State Duals debut, winning its final dual with a 47-36 victory over Audubon for seventh place. Alburnett beat West Marshall, 52-27, in the quarterfinals. Sumner-Fredericksburg, which placed fifth in its first State Duals appearance, beat the Trojans, 45-28 in the consolation round.

IIAC influence

Seven head coaches in this year’s Iowa High School Athletic Association State Duals tournament have ties to the Iowa Conference.

Wartburg boasts three representatives leading State Duals teams. Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Blake Williams and West Delaware’s Jeff Voss wrestled for the Knights. Clarion-Goldfield head coach Kurt Morgan is listed with connections to both Wartburg and University of Northern Iowa.

Two coaches from Buena Vista are in the Class 1A field. Jeff Meyer guided Sumner-Fredericksburg to a fifth-place finish in its debut. Adam McElrath led Woodbury Central to the 1A semifinals before losing to Eddyville-Blakesburg.

Top-ranked and top-seeded Alburnett recorded its best finish in school history, reaching the 1A championship. The Pirates are coached by Kane Thompson, who wrestled at Coe College.

Class 3A power Southeast Polk reached the championship dual under head coach Jason Christensen, who is from Central College in Pella.

Six head coaches list UNI as their college, counting Clarion-Goldfield’s Morgan and including Union Community’s Pat Hogan.

Three teams have coaches from Iowa and Iowa State. Davenport Assumption is coached by former Hawkeye national champion Pete Bush and Linn-Mar head coach Doug Streicher was an All-American for the Hawkeyes.
